It was important to me that I could edit the tapes to eliminate any messups or footage that's not particularly good or interesting, and with this you can do just that. After downloading and printing off the manual, it was incredibly straightforward.
I use my camcorder to transfer the footage to my laptop, and if you convert a whole tape to file (when using Advanced Mode), it will tell you that it's too large and would you like to split it. If you say 'yes' it will split it in any random place and so I prefer to previously split the footage myself into separate events, and then convert them individually, which you can then burn the files to DVD, or keep as files on your laptop. You can then fit them onto a DVD as you wish, and no event has been split.
I love it!
Since writing this review I have noticed that Keith Lawson is not too happy, as he has to buy DVD's, when he would prefer to have the footage converted to digital and not necessarily to DVD. If you use 'Advanced Mode', it is perfectly NORMAL that you will first of all save this footage as a file on your laptop. You can then transfer it to a memory stick to view directly on your TV/DVD player if you wish, or you can burn it to DVD. It's your choice. I have bought a hard drive to keep all of my memories as files on there, so that should anything happen to the DVD's which I have burned for all my children and family members, we can easily burn another copy. Simples!
Took a matter of minutes from getting it out of the box and loading the software to starting up the first video conversion and it was so much fun to be seeing our old home video's again. Even dug out our old wedding video to convert (which hasn't seen the light of day in donkey's years) so that was a trip down memory lane for us all!
Couldn't have been easier. Installed onto my Windows 8 laptop, no problem at all and very simple to hook up. I've only tried it with my VHS tapes so far as I've got other hardware to capture gameplay from my consoles but I expect this would be a nice, cheaper alternative to some of the more expensive capture cards out there at the moment, if that's what you're considering this for.
Tried it with capturing videos via the VHS recorder and that went smoothly and also tried it hooked up to the actual camcorder and again that went without a hitch. Once installed it's as easy as 1,2,3 to get started and the on screen wizard guides you through the process. Basic mode is quite limited in what you can achieve in regards to finished conversion, it's pretty much start the process and let it run. You can watch the original as you're capturing it although the preview screen is quite small. That's actually the only fault I can find with the whole thing. The controls are easy, the conversion results are smooth and overall it's a joy to use...it's just that little viewing screen is very, very small. The finished dvd is just an exact copy of what you converted, without any bells and whistles added. Advanced mode allows you to add effects and music which is nice if the audio on the original isn't all that great.Read more ›
Why you may need this
Overtime magnetically recorded video signal deteriorate. Also tape is prone to damp and fungal attack if not stored correctly. The software also allows you to record sounds from old LP's and tapes.
What it does
The package converts analogue video into digital so that it can be stored on a computer or DVD disk.
In the box
The box contains, the converter box, leads, software and instructions. You will need a Video recorder/player or audio source to use this software. If you have VHS tapes but no longer have a VHS video player car boots are a cheap source of these.
The software booted from the DVD and setup on my Windows 7 (64bit) machine with no problems at all. The process was fully automated after I had selected the language and accepted the licence agreement. Installation took about 3 minutes.
This was easy using the supplied cables. I connected an old VHJS machine to the converter box and a cable runs from the converter box into a vacant USB 2.0 port on my PC. Any analogue device can be connected including video recorders, video cameras and I suppose older analogue video editing equipment although I have not tried this.
The software interface and data capture
When the user click on the icon you are presented with a menu with three options - easy mode, advanced mode and audio recording mode to record sound from old records and cassette tapes.
This is a picture driven guide mode and all settings are done for the user. You first select your output device which is either DVD or Blu Ray. The user is then asked to insert blank media into the chosen drive.Read more ›
