Review

'Homo Jihad' is a compelling gay love story, which, in many ways, captures the zeitgeist of our times. Powerful stuff! A real page turner.' --Amjeed Kabil - author of 'Straightening Ali'. Amjeed Kabil, author of 'Straightening Ali'.

Product Description

'Homo Jihad' is a powerful and controversial new novel set in London and Israel in 2005.

The central character,David Underwood, a young school teacher, hopeless romantic and regular on the drug-fuelled gay scene in London meets Yossi, an Israeli Jew, at a nightclub and a long-distance relationship develops. But how will David react when he discovers the truth behind Yossi's tragic past? And what will happen when David's ex, Ahmed, who is under intense family pressure to marry, makes a sudden reappearance? The terrorist atrocity of 7/7 marks a turning point for the lovers.

Moving love story 6 Mar 2011
By Benjamin TOP 100 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
David is is his mid thirties, gay, a teacher at an East London primary school, and possessing a healthy disregard for political correctness. He works hard and plays hard, enjoying drug fueled weekends clubbing on the gay scene in London's Vauxhall; a drug habit that is in danger of spiraling out of control. He has been searching for The One, that special person with whom he can settle down, and thinks he has finally found him in Ahmed from the Emirates, he is in love with Ahmed, but Ahmed, despite returning that love, is about to drop him, his well connected family unable to accept that he is gay insisting that he marry and raise a family.

Then one evening in Vauxhall David stumbles across Yossi, a visiting Israeli Jew from Tel Aviv, they are immediately attracted, but can they sustain a long distance relationship, especially as Yossi has his own problems? However it seems love is in the air with promising prospects; but then Ahmed reappears restating his love for David and vowing to find a way forward. David is torn, does he love Yossi enough, or will he risk the unknown uncertainty with his first love; and can he get his drug problem, of which neither of his lovers approves, under control?

Set in 2005 against the background of the bombings of 7/7, which play a significant part, Homo Jihad is a fast moving gay love story, a story of designer drugs, an Englishman's fascination with foreign men of dark complexion, of conflicting religious and political beliefs. It is extraordinarily well written, with vivid descriptions of foreign climes and convincing dialogue bringing the characters to life, but above all it is an appealing, moving and positive love story.

Timothy Graves's Homo Jihad is at times playful and fun, as well as being beautiful and moving. First time novelist Graves demonstrates his talent as a writer. He moves easily between snappy humour which makes the novel feel at times like high-quality gay "chick lit" (the protagonist parties with his best friends and angsts over relationships), and dealing with more serious subjects - love, loss, drugs, and the way national and cultural politics play out in individual lives. This is a book that can make you laugh, cry, and think.

By Booklover Joseph TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
Timothy Graves' first novel is brilliant. It is a compelling story of personal development, of cultural tensions and, above all, of the triumph of love. The portrayal of the narrator David's own drug-filled life, partly fuelled by his reaction to a homophobic attack, is compelling and scary. His relationship with the Israeli, Yoshi, is realistically tortured and his love for Ahmed both poighant and heartwarming. The book is also in ploaces very funny: the sex lesson in the school where David teaches is worthy of Alan Bennett. All in all, this is my book of the year so far.
