I first watched a paper piecing video on you tube which helped give me a better understanding of how paper piecing works, intrigued I wanted a easy book to help get me started and I found HomeTown Quilts, however reading the one more negative review I passed on the book, but in my search I kept returning to Jodie Davis's book. After re-reading the Ugly House review I realized that basically it was just the fabric choices and that can be easily changed.
Paper piecing is great for using up scrap fabric and this book offers a lot of flexibility. I was hoping for visual step-by-step instructions, instead it has text, but they are very easy to understand.
I choose my first paper piecing pattern from her book that I thought would be easy and it was, it went fast and was a lot of fun. I used some scrap fabric to practice with so mine would also be considered ugly, but you can use scraps to practice or plan it out with nice fabric choices. Jodie's book shows nice color pictures of the completed houses, but does not tell you what colors to use.
The book has some wonderful patterns, a Barn, Church, Light House, School House and a variety of different style of houses, for me, a total beginner of paper piecing this book is perfect!
