5.0 out of 5 stars Heart-warming good sense, 11 Nov 2008
By Stephen Evans (New York, USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Garrison Keillor explains why he's a Democrat, and he does it with great humour (there really are laugh-out-loud moments). It's not a dry political treatise but a recounting of the values he grew up with (democratic values, with a small d) and which now inform his politics. The question at the end of it for me was: would sensible Republicans not have many of the same values, and might some daft Democrats not lack them. The book's really an argument for humane, sensibleness and doing the right thing, but do Democrats have a monopoly on all that? Either way, that's a question provoked by a lovely, intelligent book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A breath of fresh air, 5 May 2009
This is a breath of fresh air for a jaded socialist like me! I have grown weary, bored and sometimes horrified with party politics on both side of the Atlantic, but reading this just as the unlamented former occupant of the White House has vacated the premises gives me new hope, along with the new President. This is a beautifully-written, humanistic account of Mr Keillor's feelings about values and standards and how the world can be. The Republicanism of the Bush dynasty comes in for a real pasting, which made me gasp and laugh - I adore books where someone with a real skill with words expresses my own frustrations, but GK has an elegance and eloquence which far surpasses my own. Hugely enjoyable
