About the Author
Ryder Collins likes to call herself mama sometimes even though she has no kiddies. She is the author of a chapbook of poetry, Orpheus on Toast. She has work published in DIAGRAM, Kill Author, Fix It Broken and Juked, among others. She has won or been a finalist in some contests and been nominated for some serious stuffs, but mama does not like to brag or kiss and tell.

I recognised many of the situations and references that feature in the book, including those relating to diet (I was a vegan for two years, now a paltry dairy and wheat avoiding vegetarian) and music (I think Clutch is mentioned somewhere). I found some of Collins's devices interesting; for instance, a little way in, the narrator is introduced as an actual character, Meta, who is infatuated with Homegirl and is tempted to interfere with the unfolding of events. This seems to me to be the author's acknowledgment that storytelling is always biased and that intrusive narration should be avoided. Homegirl!'s Californian-style language reminds me of Dangerous Angels: The Wheetzie Bat Series, though Homegirl! is concerned less with love and more with one young woman's quest for independence--from family, convention and, ultimately, men. High octane, clean writing replete with strong, vividly portrayed characters.

This is not your typical love story. In 'Homegirl!' love is surrounded by darkness and it's difficult to escape. Collins' unique punk style enables us to get close to her wild Homegirl, showing us the multiple sides to both her and her Punkboy. 'Homegirl!' is a frantically energetic book depicting the challenges of love, relationships and identity in a constantly changing modern world. I found this an enthralling read that gripped me from the very start, and I can guarantee you will follow Homegirl to the very end.

Dirty, funny, shocking, then dirty again, Homegirl! will stun, titillate, thrill, flash its underwear, break hearts, and knock teeth out. This, in short, is a book that doesn't hold back. It's a punchy, brutal tale, and it sweeps the reader along at a breakneck pace. That said, it's also a book with a huge, bloody heart at its core. It's insightful and immediately recognisable to anyone familiar with the scars left by a relationship. It dissects human insecurities and foibles with jarring accuracy. And it effortlessly pulls off one of the most audacious narrative tricks I've ever encountered in a book. This is an essential read, and Ryder Collins is a new voice to cherish.
