This was the book we used for our "Domestic" lessons in the early 1970's (for some reason at school I knew it as "The Dundee Cookery Book" but the content is so much more than cookery).
The cookery section of this was the mainstay of our cookery classes and it brings back a lot of memories of the basic staples of good, plain, home cooking we were taught way back then (beginning to sound like my Gran!). It goes right back to basics - even gives you the recipe for boiled eggs!
My favourite recipe for lentil soup is in here as well as the recipe for the scones which gave me top marks at exam time! Some good old fashioned pudding recipes are also here - bread & butter pudding, summer pudding as well as some others you may have forgotten about like Queen of Puddings & Apple Snow.
I will be introducing my young son to this book very soon as I get him into the kitchen for some serious cooking lessons. I also think it would also make a good gift for students away from home for the first time.
The content of the book pre-dates my school days and it has lots of things in the laundry and housewifery sections that are probably circa WW2. Reading the laundry & housewifery sections gives you an insight into the life of women pre-automatic washing machines, tumble driers, vacuum cleaners and dishwashers.

This book took me back to my first year at the secondary school. It was everything i needed to know before i was let loose in the kitchen. It also offers advice on housekeeping and other basics. I loved this and will pass it on.

I always enjoy a good dip into a vintage book on homecraft or housewifery, there is something alarmingly attractive about detailed lists on how to approach spring cleaning, which in this type of book often involve 'making arrangements with necessary tradesmen' and donning a 'square of material' to keep your hair clean. This particular example is more given over to cookery with a large selection of simple recipes, including the wonderful Beverages section which tells us that 'When kettle is "singing" pour some of the water into the teapot and heat thoroughly' - ahh the days of the singing kettle. The front pages say that the book is for use 'In School and Home' and some of us of a certain age will remember when Domestic Science rooms often had a battered selection of such books acting as reminders of the days when Domestic Science was called Housewifery. It was from these that I first became interested in these types of books which are becoming harder to find now. This is reprint which obviously recognises that there is still an active interest in this area and I am not alone in being drawn to archaic descriptions of how to set up your scullery.
