However it had its price in his demise from the "A-list" actors. Although if I know the man he would probably shrug it off and say he never wanted to be an "A-lister" anyway. Out of interest, against everyone's advice he became a pro-boxer in the middle of his acting career. While people waited for him to get thrashed in the ring he had the last laugh winning most of his fights and not losing one of them. He became good friends with Tupak Shakur and they acted in a quite decent film "Bullet" together.
In my humble opinion he is a fine actor and worthy of much greater success. He seems to have fallen foul of the business, and yet he seems to have a good heart. Recent plastic surgery has sadly given him a strange looking face. I hope for his sake it will settle back to normal with time. See him in "One Upon A Time In Mexico" and you will recognise this, although his acting in it is fantastic, and he again plays the bad guy with a good heart. Brilliant acting from quite a few actors in this, such as Johhny Depp, yet the film itself is sadly a pile of crap. Was supposed to be in the vain of "The Good, The Bad & The Ugly" yet it fell woefully short.
Anyway back to the film Homeboy, it is humourous in places, a bit off beat, but it's also quite moving, following the life of a semi retired boxer who mixes with the wrong crowd, but has a good heart and tries to make a difference.
The climax is well orchestrated and can bring tears to the eye. Music is mainly by Eric Clapton and forms an important part of this artistic film.
Highly recommended, as is all of Mickey Rourkes more serious work. Just hope he makes a come back in later life. Take a look at some of his other films. "Barfly" is one of his other less famous yet brilliantly acted films. He did a few low budget movies after some of the trashy ones. One of the good ones is about a Rodeo rider and is highly recommended.
Come on Tarantino why don't you cast him in a half decent film and blast him to superstardom??!!
The guitar pieces are great, Eric Clapton and the other artists who have created tracks especially for this, have done themselves proud. Read more
