The tracks "The Charmer/Hope Called in Sick/My Feathers Needed Cleaning" form a short suite called "Song of Schizophrenia", whilst "There's Something Between Us and He's Changing My Words" contains the most chilling scream right in the middle. The quiet guitar piece "Sitting Still Moving Still Staring Outlooking" is just beautiful whereas the children on "Put Your Finger In Your Eye" are worrying - take that Carly Simon, Cliff Richard and John & Yoko. Its an album of contrasts: there's a little more acoustic guitar and less blasting feedback than on the debut album, with once again, many quite pretty musical interludes between the songs proper.
If you're new to His Name Is Alive, this isn't a bad place to start. If this album grabs you, then think about moving forwards or backwards to their first or third albums, but not too far (not yet), as they change so much you'd have difficulty believing anything after 2000 was by the same people.
But it's also a brilliant album. Warren Defever is admired by such bands as Cornershop and the High Llamas, and by the always quirky Beck, because he is such an innovative and careful songwriter. Every song on HIIYH seems finely worked to produce its mood, even if it has an atmosphere of spontaneity, like the title track and "Mescalina." There are literally no weak songs on this album because all tracks build up to one unified whole, although some work fine on their own.
HIIYH is truly one of the best records I have ever listened to and over the years it has remained a treasured part of my collection of albums.
