I was renting the superb
PhoneShop (Series 1) when a little box popped up with the usual 'If You Liked This...' blurb. As soon as I saw that this was written by and starring Emma Fryer (with Neil Edmond) I thought it was worth a closer look.
Featuring a mostly unknown or low key cast, this is a subtle comedy in the vein of Rob Brydon's
Marion & Geoff both in style and the reference to loss and the passage of time. Its also very funny and laugh out loud in places, soundtracked with 'all your favourite 90's anthems' cut /just/ short enough to escape massive royalty payments! Essentially, after 12 years in London, without a single word between her family or freinds, Gaynor Jacks returns home to Coventry, to find that although she doesn't recognise the place, not much else has changed.
I can imagine that many people might be put of by the fact that, like Marion and Geoff episodes are more day-to-day than event-to-event, there are few differing themes and we never see the other, adandoned, side of Gaynors (Emma Fryer's character) life, just the transitory time she spends in her time-warp bedroom at her parents house, and with her freinds in various external locations. However, this does help build the tension behind the story, and we do get a tiny glimpse of the past, right at the very end. If you are looking for a sitcom where Big Things Happen in every episode, this is probably not for you. This is 3 hours of "The One In Which A Depressed Gaynor Tries To Sort Her Life Out and Reconcile Her 12 Year Absence", and is all the better for it. If that sounds depressing in itself, just trust me, it's worth a watch.
