An informative book packed with information. However, it is American! I am a big fan of American technical publications, almost all are universally well written, but, a considerable amount of the content in this book does not travel well. The GB technical standards are different or do not apply. GB connectors have quite different names and much of the equipment used in the examples is not released in this country or uses different branding.
That said, the principles do apply and I have learned a lot. The large number of Sound Standards are explained very well; mind numbing!
I bought three books simultaneously-- ALL turned out to be American! I must be more thorough in my research or, perhaps Amazon could emphasise the origin for those books where it may be important!!!

Basically an explanation of standards and technologies 4 Aug. 2009
By Scooter - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
This isn't a bad guide, just not what I was looking for. If you want detailed explanations for the various technologies (HDMI v1 compared to 1.3), this is a decent book. However, I was hoping for a lot more illustrations about how to do things (set up a home theater wiring patch panel, layout speakers for a 7.1 setup). I was amazed at how few illustrations were included. This topic cries out for pictures to illuminate the discussion, and this book just didn't provide any.

Also, the book doesn't really help guide you in planning your own home theater. It is more of a pre-shopping guide so that you are better informed than the average sales guy at Best Buy.

There's a lot of good information online at places like Crutchfield (with illustrations), so I was hoping for more from something I had to pay money for.

Excellent Update to a Classic 12 Jan. 2009
By AvidReader - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I believe this is the first review of the new Third Edition which just came out in Nov 2008. It has been extensively updated and I highly recommend it. I also own the Second Edition (2006) and did a quick comparison ......... the organization is the same (same chapter headings) but the material has definately been revised to reflect the fast evolving HT equipment, systems, and media. There's more emphasis on Blu-ray, integration of MCPC's and gaming devices, lossless audio formats, HDMI interconnects, etc, etc. All-in-all this a very comprehensive guide to every aspect of home theater. The book starts with the basics and then layers on more detail in each area. Its a fine reference for anyone who is considering HT, or expanding/upgrading an existing HT.

Indispensable for the home theater planner 19 Nov. 2011
By JayW - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
I purchased this book from Amazon and read it before planning and installing a home theater in my basement. I consider myself already well-informed on this topic, but learned a lot from this book nonetheless. It is well-written and does a good job of explaining some very technical topics. The authors make a number of very specific recommendations that proved invaluable in my decison-making. Highly recommended.
