Product Description
Home security is an essential part of owning a home. We all need to feel safe while we're at home as well as confident when we go out that burglars cannot get in. However, many homes are surprisingly easy to break into and in many cases burglars don't even have to use force. There is a huge amount that householders could do to keep their homes secure. This highly informative and practical book shows you how to protect your home and possessions without having to spend a fortune on elaborate security systems. The book starts with a chapter on what makes crime happen and the principles of crime prevention. The chapters that follow deal with boundaries, access, door and window security, garden security, lighting for both house and garden and electronic systems. A chapter on defensive plants explains how planting a dense, thorny hedge is a good way to deter intruders. With informative text and useful diagrams throughout, Home Security is a practical, no-nonsense guide which provides clear and concise advice on how to make your home as secure as possible.
From the Author
This handy home security guide heralds a few firsts for crime prevention. To our knowledge it's the first such guide to be written by a couple of serving police officers, both of whom have been involved in crime prevention for the past 18 years. It's the first book to bring the public's attention to 'Secured by Design' a national police initiative that has led to a whole lot of new test standards for a variety of products we buy, including doors and windows. This is also the first crime prevention book to carry an endorsement from the Association of Chief Police Officers (including the Scottish Police Association) and we are very grateful to Nigel Davies, Director of the National Neighbourhood Watch Association for writing the Foreword.
Weve packed this book with as much information as we can so that you can keep several steps ahead of not just the burglars, but also the shops and people who will attempt to sell you the solutions. For example, you can now buy replacement doors and windows that have been 'designed' to keep out the burglars (as well as the weather) and the book tells you all about the British Standards that apply so you can keep the double glazing rep on their toes and actually get what you need.
Home Security is a book for absolutely everyone no matter what your circumstances and caters for all types of homes, including terraced houses, semi and detached houses, flats and maisonettes, whether they are owned or rented. And the information doesn't just stop at the covers as there are many, many references to really useful websites where you can find additional help and advice.
Heather and I have written this book for you and so we are really interested in hearing from you about any crime prevention tips you might have for us so that we might include them in a second edition of the book. To that end I have included my email address so that we can collate them. I will, of course, acknowledge any submissions.
Whilst everyone will find this book useful its the ideal introduction into crime prevention for Neighbourhood Watch Coordinators, Police Community Support Officers, Police Officers, and Council Community Safety Officers. Building industry professionals, such as architects and planners will also find it to be a useful source of advice, particularly since the published security standards have become so important. Weve covered all the crime risks we could think of including alleyway gating for terraced housing and security for basement flats. Weve considered access control issues for those of you who live in blocks of flats and even security issues if you live down by the river. If you read it and reckon weve missed out your particular security needs then please do let us know so we can fit you in next time.
Please remember that Home Security is the only crime prevention guide that carries the official endorsement of the police service and to that end Heather and I think its a pretty good book!
