mellow but great 4 Dec 2009
By Zendude
Format:Audio CD
Ok this isn't Oceansize usual style, the obviously had a load of mellow tracks, and didn't want to but them all on the next album. So we have this mini album(extend EP)full of moody( in the good sense) and chilling tunes.
I love everything Oceansize have done, and this is no exception, it may not be anything like the heavy 'Music for nurse' mini album, in actual fact its the opposite. But its great, something to listen to in the background and it shows Oceansize are a band that care about there music rather then write music for the masses.
If your an Oceansize fan, you will love this, if your new to Oceansize try out Frames or Effloresce first.
The best alternative british rock band around at the moment.

...at least that's how this release made me feel on first listen anyway!!

Oceansize have been around for over a decade and have been producing consistently top quality music. Everything they release oozes confidence and musical genius...yes, they are that good!

So why the mad title? Well, this sees an idea come to fruition that has been lurking around since 2002, drop the distortion and make lite music... And this certainly is.

Legal Teens kicks things off nicely and is lovely little tune....then things become odd with 'Water' which gets better with each listen... An instrumental, a time altering track, another instrumental (which is beautiful) into the closing 'Strand' - this EP is weird. I don't like it and give it 1 star. Next spin, I love it and give 5 stars. There is no inbetween, buy and love. My train is wombat!

I'm always eager to hear of new Oceansize releases and couldn't wait to get my hands on this one.

I have to admit I was slightly disappointed - after a couple of listens there was nothing on it I thought worth re-visiting. They have definitely entered experimental territory and the surprising aspect is there is hardly a loud guitar in sight. Could this be a sign of things to come on the new album?

Having said all this, even below their best Oceansize are still far more interesting than most other bands you are likely to hear. I just hope there is slightly more direction on the album than some of the rambling experimentation on here.

P.S. Kudos for calling track 5 'Didnaeland' (most probably a pun on disneyland?) - all people based in Scotland should have a chuckle at that one.
