Once again, I find myself thinking of doing something to the inside of my house, and once again I turn to Ilse Crawford's book for.. Ideas? Inspiration? I bought it when I was trying to re-decorate, and was stuck in a beige-y, paint-catalogue-match-y look which I just felt was wrong. I couldn't see what was right, and was looking for anything that would shake me out of the rut. This book did it.
Re-reading it reminds me that the interior decoration, contents and style of where I live should make me feel comfortable, secure and revived. I'm decorating for me, not for the next person who is going to live here. If you've looked at houses or flats for sale recently, you will have seen the endless wash of beige that passes for mainstream interior decoration. Horrible. Read this book and you won't do that to yourself.
Ms Crawford used to edit an interiors magazine, and prefers places that look messy and human to the picture-perfect designer homes her magazine used to feature. Having said which, there's a fair amount of white walls, bare floors and empty space in the photographs, but also a lot of colour, cushions, decoration and toys. She wants us to have homes that makes us feel comfortable, not that a buyer will find blandly acceptable. Some of the content is trendy of-the-mid-Oughties twaddle (a reference to electro-magentic fields as harmful or to "saving" water in domestic use - Ms Crawford forgot her school physics) which I just ignore, because the rest of it makes me remember that a house is more than just a "machine a vivre", but a place that should be warm, reassuring and comfortable.
The book is an art-object in itself - I have the red faux-satin cover version - and is beautifully printed and laid out. I bought it for the same reason I buy all my books, because on most of the pages I flicked to, I found something that made me think. If you want a sensible book about designing kitchens and living rooms, this isn't it. If you want something that makes you think again about how you use your house, this is it. Combine this with some feng shui and you're off to a whole new-age life.

Since my home was demolished in the hurricane, I have been thumbing through the likes of Veranda, In Style and other similar magazines, seeking ideas about color, arrangement and "style". Though this isn't an "idea book" with gadgets and wall paper, it offers something that is missing from most of my current reading. It opens your mind with philosophy and helps you get to the core of what you really want your home to be. It helped me focus on the important aspects of a home.
Some may find it more akin to a book of "feel good" statements. I, however, found it helps break down the boundaries we let others put on us when we express ourselves through our personal style. Basically, it gets those creative juices flowing by helping you to prioritize. The essence of your home should be a reflection of who you REALLY are-not how you want others to see you. Lest I forget, it is a beautiful book to display for easy access.
Great gift for young couples, hostess gift, anyone who is a fan of decorating magazines or is ready for a change in scenery.

touch the deep feeling about a truth home

If you seek a a/b/c guide for decorate home, this is not the book for you. But if you seek a true home for a better life, you cant miss it.
I got it from yesterday, and finish it in one day. read it to my wife over the phone, she's touched. We have a apartment for 4 years, and as a designer myself, i try to improve it over the years, some good, some bad. I'm always thinking about what's the home should be the home for the real good life and well-being. And this book open the doors for me ( instead of answering the questions directly ).
By nicely based on her design philosophy on maslow's theory of human needs, she showed how we consider the home's core value, function and form, what's important ( touching the heart, promoting humanes progress ) , what's un-important ( seemingly beatiful, stylish ), etc.
And it's also a book for general reading, for living a better life.

definetely, home is where your heart is, but this book helps out a lot.
