Well done track starting with a synth-bass sequence line that doesn't fade out till the end of the song. "Home and dry" sounds like a track recorded for "Behaviour" album and it's probably the best PSB track in ages to remind us their golden years. But it is not enough to give it 5 stars (i'll put this track only four). Which helps me to give this single the maximum rating is the 2 tracks that comes with "Home and dry". "Always" is a stunning slow track with another full-song-synth-sequence and Neil singing in a very different way than he use to sing, making it a haunting track and probably the best PSB b-side since "Decadence" (1993 "Liberation" b-side). "Sexy Northerner" is a high-NRG track with "Relentless"-like music background but sung by Neil. I think this track would have fit much better than "The Samurai in Autumn" in the album not because this song is bad (it's really cool) but "The Samurai..." hasn't anything in common with any of the tracks on "Release" and "Sexy Northerner" would have made "Relase" a much more cohesive album.

Poppier than some of their recent output, Home and Dry is a driving rock-influenced ballad, Sexy Northerner a decent if deadpan dance number and Always is vocoder-laced and wistful.
Hopefully this single points the direction the Boys are taking for the upcoming album 'Release'.

For their next single single following their "Closer to Heaven" period (1999-2001), the Pet Shop Boys offered their fans this jewel of a CD: three new, excellent songs, under the title track "Home and Dry" It is quite interesting to note that the Pet Shop Boys sound evolves significantly here, leaving behind the synth-opera style of "Closer to Heaven" to deliver a more diversified sound colour. To be sure, Johnny Marr's warm and efficient guitar has a lot to do with this but the overall production, as always with the Pet Shop Boys is meticulously crafted and put together. The melodic talent of the Boys and Neil Tennant's wonderful lyrics (he is back to form after a rather uninspiring effort in "Nightlife") do the rest and the end result is a classic single CD.

"Home and Dry" is a very touching love song with some chords that are reminiscent of Police's "Every Breath you take". In this track, the Boys are expecting the main character from "Single-Bilingual" to come back home. "Sexy Northerner" is a "tongue-in-cheek" variation on the theme already explored in "The truck driver and his mate". This is the "danciest" track of the three songs offered here, but with a twist.

The most beautiful track of the album is the magnificent ballad "Always". This is an extremely poignant song about compromises and lost dreams. The opening synth line is haunting and the song maintains this quality throughout. "Always" would have so much deserved to be a single in its own right.

I must confess that Neil Tennant's voice has an ingrained fragility throughout the CD that is very moving, and which he is not always accustomed to.
Overall, another milestone in the development of Pet Shop Boys, always after new experiments, always delivering new, formidable and unexpected musical landscapes...So highly recommended.
