Based on the critically acclaimed book "The True Meaning of Smekday" by Adam Rex. In "Home" an alien race invades Earth and uses it as a hideout from their mortal enemy. When one lowly alien accidentally notifies the enemies of his whereabouts, he is forced to go on the run with a teenage girl. The two become unlikely buddies and embark on a comical globe-trotting adventure to right his wrongs, in which our alien hero learns what it really means to be human.

Oh is a tiny alien whose people the Boov have just invaded Earth. Oh doesn't fit in with the rest of the Boov and ends up on the run with a human girl called Tip. While DreamWorks have done better this is still a fun, likeable, well animated animated comedy with a good voice cast lead by Jim Parsons, Rihanna who also provides most of the soundtrack and Steve Martin. The Boov are basically a cowardly race lead by an idiot incompetent cowardly leader on the run from their enemies the Gorg and think humans are backwards idiots and think nothing of taking our planet and relocating the human race but Oh thinks differently from the rest of the Boov.

This was one of those kids movies that moved along at an entertaining pace and kept the adults interested as well. The humour is generally light but consistent and the soundtrack to this film was actually pretty good too (Rihanna and Jennifer Lopez, providing voices to two of the characters, also sing some of the songs on the soundtrack). Jim Parsons is great as Oh, the misfit alien who just wants to make friends but comes up short in the ranks of his regimented, antisocial species. Steve Martin also lends his voice as the hilarious but clueless leader captain smek who decide while fleeing their enemy the gorgs decide Earth looks like a nice place to live, despite the little fact that it already has a native population (us). The forced relocation of the human population to "happy human towns" results in Tip (Rihanna) going on a quest to find her lost mum (Lopez) is the gist of this sweetly funny movie and it's worth seeing, kids and adults alike.8/10

I watched this wonderful animated movie at the cinema with my 12 year old daughter at the cinema yesterday and will definitely be buying the DVD. Tip is a feisty, determined Hawaiian girl, aged in her early teens. She has a very strong bond with her mother and her chubby pet cat, Pig Cat. The Boov are a race of outer space blobs who are constantly on the run from a war-like alien race called the Gorg. The Boov don't fight, they flee from danger, and they're unabashed about their cowardice. They are constantly on the lookout for a new planet to inhabit, and when they find one, they peacefully remove the incumbent species by suspending gravity. Earth falls victim to the Boov and all humans are sucked up into a giant vacuum, then deposited onto a quasi-Earth planet somewhere else in the galaxy. However, Tip manages to hide from the Boov, but loses her mum in the process... One of the Boov is the black sheep of the alien family, named Oh, who looks like a cross between a Koala Bear and one of the Minions from Despicable Me. He's clumsy, apparently ill-tempered, and struggles with broken English, but it soon transpires that he has a heart of gold. Oh and Tip slowly form an uneasy alliance to avoid the girl being captured by the Boov, and to help her reunite with her captured mother... This is a fabulous family movie, with beautiful animation, which was clearly a labour of love for the talented artists. There's a wonderful pop soundtrack with lots of addictive catchy songs. Tip is a charming heroine and Oh is a likeably daft and well-intentioned alien, even if he is by far the most camp alien I've seen since Jar Jar Binks in one of the Star Wars films. The Moov are a slighty quirky take on the Minions from the Despicable Me movies, but they help to give the film a charm all of its own.Read more ›

Earth is invaded by the friendly Boov, who relocate us to nice Candyland type communities. Tip (Rihanna) a savvy seventh grader is left behind. She runs into outcast and fugitive Oh (Jim Parsons) who go on a mission to locate her mom and save the planet from being destroyed by a death star.
The film is cute and fun. The message is friendship and family with a hint at diversity. Jim Parsons makes an excellent voice as I envision his character on "The Big Bang Theory." Boov change color based on their emotions. I liked it, even if your kid did not.

I mainly bought this as I love Jim Parsons in Big Bang Theory and the trailer looked as though he'd be just as funny in this role. Me, my wife and kids (7, 12, & 14) all absolutely love this film, it was even better than I'd expected. Their isn't really anything to say that hasn't been said already, although I will say that this is one of our favourite animated films of recent years. The critics may have given it mixed feedback but I'd highly recommend it for any age.

In its first scenes I found Home to be tough going - too much action; one of those films that seems to be designed for kids' short attention spans - but it's worth sticking with as it develops into a touching (though little bit thin) story about a girl separated from her mother following the invasion of Earth by some likeably inept purple aliens.
The most striking thing about the film for me was the animation - the streets of Paris are recreated to such a level of detail that they feel familiar. The creatures - in particular the cat (the one that looks like a guinea pig in the picture) are all charmingly depicted. "Home" also contains some memorable dialogue. On the negative side, the soundtrack has about two Rihanna songs too many and I would also say that the movie is a bit too long.
Overall, for me, it's not quite a classic. Some adults will like it more that others but all kids will love it. I will certainly watch Home at least once more when it comes out on DVD/BluRay. I'm glad I saw it in the cinema as I had no choice but to watch it to the end. Whereas if I'd watched at home (no pun intended) I probably would have switched off 30 minutes in and missed out - so as I say, stick with it.
