Product Description

Richard Holmes

A wonderful Santa's sack of personal accounts, some serious and others frivoulous, but many with a note of that poignacy that comes from spending Christmas far away from home. This is, beyond question, my Christmas book.

Sir Alistair Horne

A deeply moving book. A real work of love, and considerable research. I can't think of a more appealing Christmas present to give - or to receive.

At a time when our Armed Forces should be uppermost in everyone's minds, this timely collection brings together moving accounts of Christmases spent on the frontline, from the American War of Independence through to Iraq in 2006. The accounts are varied and touching, and imbued with the dark sense of humour for which the British squaddy is famed. This book is a great read and reminds us all of the debt of gratitude we owe to our Armed Forces, particularly at this time of year.

Perfect present? 28 Nov 2007
By Murray
Fascinating (and quite moving) collection of real Christmas sentiments from corners of foreign fields.
A great book to dip in and out of, just right for my short attention span!
I know what my Father's getting for Christmas - in fact I might even buy him his own copy...

A Christmas cracker 5 Oct 2009
A lovely book that I thoroughly enjoyed from start to finish. Beautifully researched and sensitively written. A thoroughly recommended present for those who are either interested in straightforward military history or a glimpse into the private thoughts of those in the front line at the one time of year when thoughts always turn to home.
