I think this is a great winemaking starter kit because it has both the equipment and the chemicals you'll need to ferment your grapes/fruits/vegetables. It also comes with a book whose help I cannot overstate. I'm a wine lover, if you want to call it that way, and have visited wineries in different countries. But things are different when it comes to making your own stuff.

So I had the curiosity and a friend had the grapes that he grows at home. This kit provided pretty much the rest: sterilizer, buckets and spoon, sulfite tablets, pectolase (to avoid starch hazing), yeast and its nutrients, hydrometer with its testing tube (believe me, it will become your 'best friend'), a bucket cover with an airlock, syphon, funnels, measuring cup, plus the book.

Following the instructions from the book and relying on tips gathered through internet research (and not without a lot of hesitation, doubts and even little mistakes at first), I'm already in the final stages of fermenting my first gallon of wine. It will soon be racked to rest. It's a great experience and, if your idea is to learn more about winemaking, there is nothing better.

Now, having said all that, I'd like to add that it's a natural progress that you may want to buy extra equipment in order to have more flexibility and play around with your wine a bit more in the future, and that's what I've done. For my second batch, I've bought a proper glass demijohn (which allows less contact with oxygen in the secondary fermentation compared to the bucket), a bigger bucket for primary fermentation and a syphon that you just pump and it sucks the liquid, which I prefer to the one that's only a little hose.

This product could really do with a small illustrated inventory explaining the contents to the absolute beginner, with perhaps ten essential tips. The recipe book is helpful to a point, but is not written with this particular kit in mind, so working out what relates to what was pretty frustrating and time-consuming. Lots of extra internet research got my understanding up to a workable level but I was concerned I had ruined my mead with the delays.

I would recommend a beginner does plenty of planning and reading around a recipe, identifying the equipment and when to use it (eg when to use the hydrometer) before jumping in too soon. That may have been my problem!

I notice they are now throwing yeast in, as one would expect given their claim it contains 'All The Basic Equipment Required And More'. This was not so when I bought mine - a major stumbling block because I had my honey solution sitting in the bucket for days before the separate yeast order arrived. Aparently it was not included before because there are so many types for different wines, but they have now sourced a generic one. Good move.

Having said that, the people back at Ballihoo responded super fast to my emails querying the tubes and cylinders and even refunded the cost of the yeast. Excellent customer service from that point of view. I've also ordered other items since which arrived very quickly and I will definitely continue to buy Ballihoo products.

Now I have it all up and working properly I would say it is a good kit in itself. My first batch has been brewing a few weeks and everything seems to be going well inside the bucket.

Has everything you'll need to make a wide variety of wine so well worth buying if you are making different wines depending on what fruit you have picked, as I do. I would recommend the purchase of glass demi-johns as well and using the buckets for the start of the fermentation process otherwise it's a lot of work for not a lot of bottles of wine. Happy brewing!

Bought for hubby who is keen to start making wine as he thinks it will be cheaper, not used yet as we are waiting for the autumn when we can go berry picking. It has everything in it to start your first wine.
