It's a wonderful slice of post-war British comedy drama. George Knowles (Jack Warner) does the pools every week. One day he is amazed when all his score draws come up and he scoops the jackpot. 4.0 out of 5 stars The Huggetts? fight another battle 31 Oct 2008

This charming film directed by Vernon Sewell who always delivered light comedy well, stars 2 of the most popular performers of the era Jack Warner and Kathleen Harrison. The co-stars are another 2 familiar and much loved character players Charles Victor and Thora Hird. There is also young actress Lana Morris who was very popular too.
The story all about a football pools win, family disagreements, an inventor next door and funny relatives produces some great performances particularly Leslie Henson as cake loving Uncle Tom.
Made in 1956 this looks back to the earlier triumphs as The Huggetts of the 2 stars and you cannot but compare their performances. I'd say all goes well and this is well worth watching. The print that Odeon Entertainment have is clear and the sound fine. The liner notes booklet is up to the usual informative standard. Look out for more vintage titles in their Comedy Drama category.

5.0 out of 5 stars home and away 18 Jun 2009
Once again we are blessed with the older black and white films finally being put onto DVD. I love these for not only are they an opportunity to see the commencement of many an household names careers but they are a social history to see how our country once was - good or bad. In Home and Away names such as Jack Warner (Dixon of Dock Green, Blue Lamp) and Thora Hird (Last of the Summer Wine)step up to give great performances when Jack playing George Knowles checks his football pools to discover that he has won. A problem then arises when the coupon is discovered to belong to his son. Wonderfully played by all including the lovely Kathleen Harrison who plays Elsie, George's (Jack Warner) wife.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth watching 24 May 2009

A great comedy, and a good plot with some wonderful characters, If you like this era you will love this film, especially the serving of afternoon tea in the front room with assorted aunts. Valarie White locks horns with Jack warner, if you have seen 'Hue and Cry' you will have met these two before, if you have not seen 'Hue and cry' go out and but that too.
