5.0 out of 5 stars An Emotional Roller coaster, 23 Mar 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Homage to Hope: South African Memories of a Daughter of Anti-apartheid Activists (Paperback)
This book is a child's view of the hated apartheid system. For those who lived through this regime and similar facist societies is it a must have book. Too often we concentrate on the adults in this situation and forget the added terror that comes from only half understanding what's going on.
I would have welcomed more photos throughout but it is nevertheless a chilling, truthful and emotional read

5.0 out of 5 stars Homage to Hope, 5 Jun 2003
This review is from: Homage to Hope: South African Memories of a Daughter of Anti-apartheid Activists (Paperback)
This book is an important one for anyone who wants to understand life in South Africa during the apartheid years. The book describes the author's experience of being a child of parents who were activists in the stuggle for freedom. The pain of a living in a divided society and of having parents who were under constant threat of being arrested or of actually being imprisoned is searingly described in the present tense through the use of diaries. It is impressive that there is no sense of blame or resentment in how she describes her parents' behaviour but much love and a deep understanding of their struggles and their courage. The voice of a child and then of a young woman comes through clearly, simply and directly. I found this book hard to put down.
