Review

With enthusiasm and learning, Phil takes the reader on a journey of discovery to these scattered sites, pushing through dense woodland, wading into heather and bracken, climbing over bare tors, peeping into ancient churches and striding along out-of-the-way tracks and paths. thisisdevon.co.uk

Product Description

Sacred wells have played an important part in the culture and landscape of Cornwall for several millennia, and continue to do so. Holy Wells: Cornwall is a collection of beautiful colour photographs of forty-five of the most important and pre-eminent wells in the county, accompanied by an informative text about the history and legends associated with them, and a number of poems celebrating them by Robert Southey, Arthur Quller Couch and others. Like Wales and Ireland, Cornwall was an influential centre for the Celtic church and pagan places of worship were taken over by Christianity. Many Celtic saints - St Piran, St Euny, St Nonna, St David, St Mary, St Cuby, St Anne, St Sampson - are referenced in the names of churches and wells which stand in towns and villages, alone on moorland next to stone circles and iron age settlements, hidden in valleys and even in sea caves. Phil Cope takes the reader on a journey of discovery through densely wooded terrain, past bare tors, into ancient churches and along almost forgotten road and tracks, to lead us to special places of wonder and enrichment. Holy Wells: Cornwall includes over 256 photographs, together with a map, bibliography and index.

Holy Wells:Cornwall

Wow!
Another visually stunning record, researched with loving care to celebrate The Holy Wells: Cornwall.

Phil Cope has recorded with a rare intimacy the peace and power of the sacred wells of Cornwall.

His images and knowledge of the waters reassure me that beyond our limited senses exist special magical places, which can be found if we truly believe.

A wonderful follow on from Holy Wells: Wales: a photographic journey.

Where next I wonder ...

Holy Wells: Cornwall - A Photographic Journey by Phil Cope is not merely a gazetteer of the more renowned and easily accessible holy wells of Cornwall directed at the casual visitor but a profound celebration of the abundance of such water-sources which can be found in the county. The colour photographs vividly capture the character of these wells from the famous St. Clether's Well and Chapel to the more obscure and elusive Lady Holy Well at Ponsanooth near Falmouth. The true measure of a book such as this is if an affirmative answer can be given to the question, "Would I want to rush off immediately and visit the places described in this book?" and the answer here is, "Definitely!" Well done, Phil!

Cornwall has more books on holy wells than any other part of the UK (world?!), so does it need another? If the book in question is Phil Cope's latest offering, the answer is definitely yes! This is by far the best illustrated book on the county's holy wells and offers a splendid insight to anyone new to the subject, and is a wonderful momento of the wells to those who have visited them. The author is especially good at setting the scene for each well, indeed many of the photos show surrounding features and landscapes, but this serves to enhance the sense of place for armchair travellers. The quality of the photos is very high indeed and he offers some interesting insights to the subject in the introductory chapter. Highly recommended!
