Book Description

Another action-packed adventure by the author of the bestselling Outlaw

Product Description

Arrows will fly. Swords will swing. Heroes will fall. Legends will survive. And the Holy Land will never be the same. 1190 AD: Richard the Lionheart has launched his epic crusade to seize Jerusalem from the cruel Saracens. Marching with the vast royal army is Britain's most famous, most feared, most ferocious warrior: the Outlaw of Nottingham, the Earl of Locksley -- Robin Hood himself. With his band of loyal men at his side, Robin cuts a bloody swathe on the brutal journey east. Daring and dangerous, he can outwit and outlast any foe -- but the crimson battlefields of the Holy Land are the ultimate proving ground. And within Robin's camp lurks a traitor -- a stealthy enemy determined to slay Christendom's greatest outlaw before the trumpets fade. Blazingly paced and richly imagined, featuring a cast of unforgettable characters and packed with fast, furious action, Holy Warrior is adventure at its thrilling, white-knuckle best.

A shaggy dog story! 3 Aug 2010
By Mr. A. I. Harrison TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Well for those as yet unblooded in Angus Donalds version of the Hood legend, you should perhaps be warned it is more 'Reservoir Dogs' than 'Prince of Thieves'.

This the second outing with our story teller Alan 'the warrior minstrel' Dale takes us on a crusade with Richard the Lion Heart. As Robin and his merry band of cuthroats, make good on their promise in 'Outlaw' to repay the Knights Templar for digging them out of a bit of a hole. They jion the Blood thirsty Monarch on a march accross Europe and into the Holy Lands leaving a trail of corpses behind them.

Readers who have read Cornwell's Arthorian trilogy will recognise the format. Dale in his dotage re-tells of his youth spent with famous brigand. It is a warts and all version, with the normally loveable and noble Robin painted as a ruthless Godfather type figure.

The story is very much like the first volume in style, though I fancied it flowed better and was perhaps even more shocking and blood splattered. The action comes often and is descriptive and visceral when it does. Dale himself is a likeable and amiable companion to journey with. You find yourself sympathising and shouting for him despite the psychotic exploits of his mentor.

Donald mixes a few tasty subplots in with the actual cruscade itself. A bit of a who dunnit and of course a personal mission of vengence for young master Dale to undertake, and it is these elements that will keep you flicking the pages over. Underscoring this is a seemingly accurate account of Richard 1 Cruscade which provides some quite amazing story lines.

All in all a highly enjoyable blood and guts adventure story that does pretty much what it says on the tin. Lovers of Cornwell will feel quite at home and are unlikely to want their money back!

I approached this follow up to the excellent "Outlaw" with a degree of trepidation. It had been a while since I had enjoyed Outlaw and I was worried that I might have forgotten where the story left off and it might be hard to get back into, especially with the recent Robin Hood film helping to confuse with another re-imagining of the story.

But I needn't have worried as I was swept straight into the story without the need for a re-cap. Holy Warrior is (like Outlaw) told from the perspective of the young Alan-a-Dale, impetuous, naive, trusting and religious who is both enthralled and afraid of the man we know as Robin Hood. Robin Hood is a complex character and certainly not a nice guy - a determined and clever gang leader making the best use of his circumstances. You sympathise with Dale's emotions because as a reader you switch between understanding Hood and then being disappointed with his actions. And the narrative is the perfect balance to shunt the fast paced story forward, but very much from Dale's perspective rather then a historic account (although much of the history is very accurate).

The story picks up from the point where Robin Hood (and his gang) have been pardoned by the returning King Richard and are preparing to join him on the third crusade to the Holy Land. By joining the crusade Robin Hood is fulfilling an obligation; he had no real belief or passion for the crusade itself.

The story starts in the UK placing Dale and Robin Hood in York at the time of the infamous Jewish massacre of 1190 but then moves them with Richard's army through to the sacking of Messina, conflict on Cyprus and then onto the siege of Acre where Richard ordered the cold blooded execution of 2,700 Muslim prisoners of war - a horrific act which stained the Crusade. The story ends with Richard taking on Saladin at the battle of Arsuf in 1191.

Through young Dale's eyes we see Richard's campaign with the side (and imagined obviously) story of Robin Hood.

Violent and with some earthy language at times, this may not suit all tastes, but I thought it was excellent.

The second novel in Angus' superb Outlaw series takes a slightly different direction from the first. While Outlaw drew on the traditional legends of Robin Hood and used them to create a new tale in a very realistic environment, the feel was clearly still a Robin in Sherwood one, for all its grit and realism. Holy Warrior is entirely different, and this to me is the making of the book. It would have been easy enough for the author to revisit the old territory for a sequel, but I think such would only have diminished the impact of the first. Taking the story in a new direction has kept the series fresh and made Holy Warrior as much a great book in its own right as a great sequel.

When the first book ended, given the situation (which I shall not reveal for fear of spoilers), I did wonder how Angus was going to be able to produce a sequel. This tale, still told from the point of view of Alan Dale, with Robin as an objective character rather than the lead, surprised me in a number of ways.

Firstly, the characters have changed subtly due to their experiences. The Alan we see in Holy Warrior is a different man to the boy in Outlaw, more confident, stronger, a little more embittered and thoughtful. Robin also had changed, burdened by so many more cares and difficulties than once beset him. The introduction of a number of strong new characters also injects fresh life into the tale.

Secondly, the story is set to the background of the Third Crusade. This event is one of the few parts of medieval history I'm fairly familiar with and I wondered just how it was going to surprise and entertain me, given my foreknowledge. The answer is: perfectly. The story is not hinged upon the crusade, though the holy war is clearly a large part. It is more a story of struggle, revenge, personal growth and change, orienting specifically mostly around Robin, Alan, their Jewish friends and a new vicious enemy who I shall not name yet. Amazingly to me, there is one event in the 3rd crusade that I consider the most amazing and fascinating and in an unexpected move, this event almost goes unnoticed due to the absence of the narrator. Such wonderful 'curve-balls' are what kept me guessing.

Thirdly, as a historian living near York, I was impressed with Angus' handling of late 12th century York and the events that took place there. These events I know well and yet they were made to fit seamlessly into the tale without a hiccup, as though they had always been linked.

Essentially, while there is so much more I could say, I will simply say bravo, Angus, and I look forward to reading King's Man, which sits watching me expectantly from the bookcase.
