Biography

Biography by Andrew Leahey
Initially embraced as "the Southern Strokes" for their resurrection and reinvention of Dixie-styled rock & roll, Kings of Leon steadily morphed themselves into an experimental rock outfit during the 2000s. The Tennessee-bred quartet debuted in 2003 with the Holy Roller Novocaine EP, whose blend of raw, unpolished boogie rock was further explored on ... Read more in Amazon's Kings of Leon Store

With the new rock reveloution in full swing and every band new to the scene trying to claim the right to the throne of Rock's top dogs for themselves, it has come down to four kings from Tennesse to try and almost lazily, wrestle the title for themselves. The EP starts with Mollys Chambers an awesome introduction, it's quick, it's sharp and it's bluesy. In fact your still reeling when the best track on the mini album finishes and the next one begins. This again comes at pace, up-tempo, stong guitar and with a southern drawl. There is no screeching on the vocals, unlike with Karen O, front of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the mood instead is lazy, it's laid back, there's a feeling the singer might even be doing this in his sleep so relaxed is his tone. Yet it works on both the first two quicker tracks and the next two slower numbers. Californa waiting definitely has a touch of the Beach Boys in there to set up a sunset west coast feel, before finally they round off with the title track. This time they switch back, upping the tempo and the ante. You've had a rest in the middle to sit back and sip a beer, while dangling your feet in the ocean. Now it's time to pull your dirty denim back on and strut down the street, with a hope that soon the Kings will pull their battle armour back on and head for the studio.

Have been hearing good things about this band who entertain us from way up in the Deep South of America...not far from Memphis.Taking there name from their Fathers and Grandfathers(Leon) the Kings Of Leons Holy Roller Novocaine ep kicks off with Mollys Chambers,a rousing up tempo song very reminiscent of The Allman Brothers who you can tell are a big influence.California Waiting is more laid back but you still heavily see the 1970s influences coming through yet again. They end with Holy Roller Novcaine which is as good as it gets...Im hoping that this is just the start of what promises to be one of the best new bands of 2003.I hope Im not disappointed..

These guys don't even have a full album out yet, but even so they're still tearing up the charts (check out MTV:2). This EP is one of the best I've heard in a while- while these guys may look like some band left over from the 70s, they are quite rocking in a modern way, but with a hint of blues. Almost flawless, but short. If these guys keep it up, they should have quite a good future in front of them- this is well worth buying!
P.S.- Their new(er) single, "Red Morning Light" may possibly be even better! Look out for that too...
