5.0 out of 5 stars A lovely little tough device, 31 Oct 2007
By Sood "Sood" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have been using this for the last few years on three different nokia (smart) phones and my trusty palm pda (T3), my friends use it on their laptops, palm T5, Treo, a variety of mobiles and dell axim pda. I didnt really know much about GPS when bought the item, so I bought it on recommendation (my friends have used many other brands as well, but everyone seemed to think the hollux was one of the best), and have I never regreted buying the hollux 236.

It uses the (then) new SiRF III low power consumption chipset which means you get more running time from a charge, averaging 10/12 hours depending on setting. And since portable devices by their very nature are not always around power supplies the longer it will run on its own, the better, but I still keep the cigarette lighter socket charger just in case in the glove compartment :-) The unit will not only supply GPS information via bluetooth but can also work with a USB cable to provide the same data to a computer, allowing you to use the GPS for more than one purpose.

It is a well designed unit, small and light and sits nicely on the dashboard thanks to its rubber feet although I have taken to throwing mine in the glove box or even leaving it in my rucksack where it works just as well! The only thing i would say, is it doesnt pick a signal very well from inside the house, although it helps if you leave it near a window, but then you will be using this device mainly in the car! This little unit has really been abused by me, and fallen countless times but has taken everything very well.

Manual was painfully thin, but then there is not much to it, for most people you will switch it on and pair it using default passkey of 0000 with any bluetooth enabled device, and with the number of blue tooth devices around most people will know how to do this anyway without having to read on how to do this. Then you fire up your gps software (I always use tomtom) and tell it what gps device to use (select other gps device in tomtom menu) and thats it.

Accuracy is another area where this unit has impressive numbers. It can track 20 satellites at once, compared to the 16 most other units can handle. The fix time for both cold and warm starts are impressively low. Cold start fix is less than 42 seconds and warm start less than 38 seconds. Hot start is measured in milliseconds.

It has a port for an external antenna, but I have never had the need to use one; the only niggle I had (a very very minor one, not really a niggle) is I always found my car to be a couple of metres behind where I really was on tom tom map (havent figured out whether its the tom tom software or the gps), but this is so minor that it isnt really a niggle, tom tom warns you about turnings at least 300 yards or so in advance so its not really a problem, and come on, if your a metre out when you've put the post code in tomtom and are advised you've reached your destination, are you really that bothered that the house or office is only a couple of metres away?!

It has the ability to convert to mouse mode, although at the time I bought it, no mouse USB cable was included, but I havent really played with it - all i bought it for was to switch it on, start up my TomTom and go, which it does fantastically over the years.

I was quite surprised to see it hasnt actually dropped down that much in price, but then you are getting a really good unit.

Bottom line: This is a solid bluetooth GPS antenna from a company that has specialized in GPS products since 1994. It is super simple to use, fast, portable, and long lasting. If I ever had to buy another one again I would definately stick with Hollux.

i tried others including cable usb gps devices but this puts them to shame, fast & more accurate, easy to use and auto upload of drivers means anyone can use one.
