5.0 out of 5 stars Truly beautiful pieces that are little known 9 Mar 2014

My voice teacher suggested these for my senior recital but they were not able to be done at that time. They are truly a beautiful setting and some day I hope I can do justice to them in a church setting. A challenge to work toward in my life. Thank you for helping me find them again.

3.0 out of 5 stars Somewhat uneven, and my rating may be a bit unfair 21 Jun 2011

This is a tough disc for me. The music and the choice of texts is really intriguing, and for those only familiar with "The Planets," these songs represent a very different side of Gustav Holst. On the other hand, I found some of the performances to be rather annoying.

I love Susan Gritton's singing. Most of the time, I found tenor Philip Langridge's singing to be not too distracting. Christopher Maltman's style drives me crazy, and this is purely a personal preference. I might be the only one out of a hundred who feels this way, but what can I say? It is a style of singing which I find to be far too distracting, and this is indeed a shame, because Maltman gets the most interesting songs on the album. This may be a totally unfair assessment on my part, so consider this to be a huge caveat to go along with what would appear to be a not very good rating of this album. Your mileage may vary...
