The album mix of "Hollywood Tonight" lulls the listener into a false sense of thinking that it may be another down-beat ballad like "Hold My Hand". But then...BAM! Michael Jackson beatboxes his way into a real stomper with an incredibly-catchy bassline and chorus. In my opinion, this is the certainly the best and most commercial track on the "Michael" album (though it's not my favourite!), and was an obvious choice for the next single.
This new "Throwback Mix" is also interesting - it uses a sample of "Billie Jean" combined with stripped-down but effective vocals from Michael. The muted bass is terrific and it is certainly a dance mix through and through. The decision to remove the spoken bridge as was present in the album version of the song was welcomed by those who expressed distaste in it, but personally I think the spoken bridge would have worked well in this mix too.
In any case, if you like MJ's previous music, you will LOVE this song. It has all of the elements of an MJ classic in-the-making, and harks back to such favourites as "Billie Jean", "Thriller" and "Bad". If you haven't purchased this excellent release already, I urge you to do so. You will not be disappointed.
Long live the King!
