1.0 out of 5 stars Hollywood Musicals of the 50's 12 Jan 2008
I was sorely disappointed in this DVD - the quality was very poor and as I have some of the videos, have seen some of the excerpts shown I know for a definite fact the colour is really disconcertingly poor. To me it was like a copy of an original.
Not pleased one bit. Jessie Cowan.

1.0 out of 5 stars waste of money 17 Nov 2010
Format:VHS Tape|Verified Purchase
The quality of this DVD is abysmal - worse, possibly than a VHS. I hoped it might improve after the first few clips but it didn't. I'm not even going to donate it to charity - it's an insult to the amazing musicals, not a homage.

1.0 out of 5 stars Total Waste of Money 17 Nov 2000
By A Customer - Published on
I'm so sorry that I paid about $15 for this DVD at a local store. It's not even worth 50 cents. Not only the video & sound qualities are terrible, the whole thing is just a cheap rip-off attempt. Just as the other viewer says, this DVD takes faded trailers and recut them into a documentary. Much worse (and extremely annoying) is the so-called part 2 of this DVD which has a totally false and misleading title "most memorable dance scenes". That was the main reason for me to buy this DVD. I can't describe how frustrated & disappointed I was when I got to that part 2. Each so-called dance scene lasted less than 15 seconds, some lasted about 2 seconds (and I'm not exaggerating, either). My advice is, don't even waste $1 on this piece of garbage.

1.0 out of 5 stars A disappointment 10 Sep 1999

This DVD takes faded trailers from major motion pictures and attempts to recut them into a documentary. The end result is underwhelming. The "interviews" provided are minimal to the extreme.

1.0 out of 5 stars Old Movie Trailers Passed Off As Documentary 8 May 2002
By Gary F. Taylor - Published on
HOLLYWOOD MUSICALS OF THE 50S attempts to mislead purchasers by presenting itself as a documentary. It is nothing of the kind: it is a collection of movie trailers held together by spurious commentary.
Like most film fans, I enjoy seeing film trailers--but I resent the manufacturer's attempt to mislead the purchaser re this disk's content. Moreover, the trailers have not been restored, the transfer is bad, and the commentary not only gets in the way of the trailers, it offers absolutely nothing of interest in and of itself. Avoid this psuedo-documentary at all costs.

1.0 out of 5 stars Misleading description 18 Aug 2007

When I read the description of this I thought it was a movie. Instead, it turned out to be more of a theatrical trailer or a documentary. It really is boring.

1.0 out of 5 stars Underwhelming gives it too much credit... 28 Jan 2011
By Amazon Customer - Published on
It's definitely an overview of musicals from the 50's, but...

If that guy says "hammersteen" one more time... I think "Die in a fire" does apply here.

I know finding footage of these movies can be very difficult, but if you're going to make a documentary, at least try and get the names right.

Being forced to watch it right now. I thought it was wrong to use "cruel and unusual punishment" on anyone...
