Paxton is best known for directing the novelty smashes Alley-Oop and Monster Mash, but he was already a veteran of the charts as a part of the duo Skip & Flip. The multi-talented singer-songwriter-producer set up shop in Hollywood in 1960, and over the next five or so years generated a remarkable catalogue that straddled not just novelty but R&B, doowop, surf, hot rod, girl groups, jazz, garage rock, country and gospel all bearing his idiosyncratic touch.
A large quota of the tracks on Hollywood Maverick appear on CD for the first time, having previously only been available on tiny labels that the workaholic Paxton seemed to form every other week. Many, such the vocal group gems The Clock and Never Again, are heavy duty rarities, while others are unknown classics waiting to be discovered. RocknRoll, R&B, instrumentals, crazy dance tunes and the plain bizarre are all factors in the equation.
We also hear the earliest recordings of Gary Paxton himself from the rockabilly Pledges via Skip & Flip and the Hollywood Argyles to some of the rare singles he cut under his own name for Liberty and other labels including the rockin What Kind Of Girl Youve Been.
This dynamic anthology not only traces Paxtons career but also includes early and/or rare recordings by David Gates, Paul Revere & The Raiders, Richard and Dorothy Berry and a host of other luminaries. We also hear the very first recording of the future hippie anthem Jesus Is Just Alright by the Art Reynolds Singers.
The packed booklet features a definitive history of the era with lengthy quotes not just from the man himself but a wide range of his associates in those years. Loaded with photos and memorabilia that really give a feel for the pioneering spirit of Hollywood in the early 1960s, Hollywood Maverick is a document of a never-to-be repeated time in music history, and pays tribute to one of rockn rolls most colourful characters.

Workaholic and all round nutter,
By Richard "Alice Collector" (Blackpool England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hollywood Maverick: The Gary S Paxton Story (Audio CD)
Seems you have to be totally crazed to produce great music and Gary Paxton after tasting life on one side of the tracks went to the other and became a Born Again Christian.Hence the Art Reynolds Singers who cut the original of a gospel song the Byrds would cover.
Whatever the man knew what he was doing and he did it Here on this first compilation of his productions are 31 songs in chronological order from the Pledges in 1958 to the Art Reynolds Singers in 1969.Along the way it takes in the first hits which featured Paxton as a singer (Skip & Flip)-Clyde Skip Battin would later provide a straight link to the Byrds-/Paul Revere & the Raiders, the Hollywood Argyles and Bobby Boris Pickett whose group the Cordials had already had a single out produced by Paxton. There's a thick booklet with an interview and label scans

"I produced every record like it *was* my next big hit.",
By Annie Van Auken - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Hollywood Maverick: The Gary S Paxton Story (Audio CD)
HOLLYWOOD MAVERICK: THE GARY S. PAXTON STORY is lovingly-produced by British outfit ACE records. It contains 32 of this seminal r&r producer's most interesting tracks. The included 20-page booklet offers record label and studio portrait repros, a detailed bio plus comments from Paxton, Bobby 'Boris' Pickett and others.
BIO-- Gary S. Paxton (he insists on that middle initial!) is a brilliant composer, arranger and producer. During his rock & roll period, Gary's sense of a record's commercial potential was often less acute than his promotional skills. For years drug and alcohol abuse were Gary's downfall. As an example, Paxton blew all the much-needed royalties from his two biggest hits, "Alley Oop" and "Monster Mash" on addictions. Besides those two famous songs, Gary Sanford Paxton produced Tommy Roe's high-charters "Sweet Pea" and "Hooray for Hazel," also "Cherish" and "Along Comes Mary" for The Association. Troubles have dogged Gary all his life-- he was molested at age seven and had spinal meningitis at 11. As a teen he toured the American Southwest with several unsuccessful and now-forgotten bands. Following his partner's 1970 suicide, Gary found Christianity and a sober life. Late in 1980, Gary was shot three times by hitmen hired by a singer he was producing. He barely survived and was disabled for nearly a decade. Now an ordained minister, for the past nearly 40 years Paxton works exclusively in gospel and country music. These days, Gary's battles with hepatitis C limit the ability to work. Included here is "Midnite Ride," an early Paul Revere & the Raiders 'B' side. (The 'A,' "Like Charleston" reached #118 on BILLBOARD's national "Bubbling Under" chart.) Much like that track, "Hollywood Maverick" is a gathering of deserving "near misses" and other obscurities spanning the years 1958-66. As with all ACE products, master tape transfers are of the highest quality. "Monster Mash" (1962) and "Jesus is Just Alright" (1966) are the only stereo recordings here. Recommended from ACE RECORDS: THE GOLDEN AGE OF ROCK 'N' ROLL: SPECIAL "BUBBLING UNDER" EDITION is the finest collection of hits that never were you'll ever hear! Feature artists include pre-fame Dr. John, Freddy Fender and The Band. Also cuts from Phil Spector, Aaron Neville, the Jesters, the Del-Vikings, the Earls, Bobby Bare and Ral Donner. |
