Product Description

Formed in 1972, the Hollywood Brats were Punk long before the term was invented. Dressed in make-up and women’s blouses, they sought to shock whilst making the music they wanted to make. The packaging for this CD has been lovingly assembled with biographies from both vocalist Andrew Matheson and guitarist Brady plus all the lyrics. The digital mastering was undertaken by keyboard player Casino Steel and having been long out-of-print, this is a very welcome re-press for this classic album.

Pre punk boys play with gibsons, lipstick, tight pants and tranplant a New York tude to the UK and rock to the sleeze of the Dolls, Iggy and Bolan.

Light years away from Brickie rock of Mud and Sweet, the Brats streamlind the sleeze into surrogate punk of the Boys. They were consigned to playing second on the bill with the Lurkers and Vibrators when they should have been serenading the world with Johnny Thunders, the Pistols and the Ig.

This is punk rock party music without the masses banging the tables over, they can strut and preen to the bended chords of thrust and grind. It has a little Rolling Stones but far preferable to the Beatles covers of the Boys, it was in effect a more dangerous form of rock.

They perform then he kissed me from a female perspective, playing with the genders. They serenade the teenage daygream of life beyond school and launch the serenade to Iggy's "Sick of You" with "Sick on You", a track for divorcees going through a bad patch. It is an album of hidden gems and for those who want to launch a glam party, it plays along between the Dolls, the Ig and the Stones.

This is the way British Glam should have been headed. Comparisons with the Dolls are fair enough but these tracks stand up on their own and sound suitably trashy and melodic. Chez Maxime, Courtesan and Tumble With Me stand out for me, and of course the wonderful tongue in cheek cover of Then He Kissed Me. Side One rattles by and side two throws a few interesting tracks in. Anyone who enjoys the trashing punky glam that the Dolls, Hanoi Rocks and others play will love this ... with an especially British tinge.

If you like the dolls, if you like sleaze, if you like men dressed in ridiculously tight trousers then this is most definitely for you...full of great songs, all of which make you wonder why they're not as big as maybe they should be. Overall i really enjoy this cd, and even my mum likes it!!! Buy it, you know you want to...

absolutely real glam -- frill, bite, and guitar 12 May 2000
By "sylvie@21stcentury.com" - Published on Amazon.com

You will not hear a better example of what glam, even as opposed to glitter, represents. The Hanoi Rocks guys are familiar with this, of course, and you will hear the similar New York Dolls vein, but this is prettier (and more cunning) and absolutely catchy, actually quite pleasant. "Sick on You," "And Then He Kissed Me," and "Tumble With Me," the titles alone say it all. The musicianship is here, and so is the camp...an intense romp.

BUY THIS ALBUM RIGHT NOW. 5 Aug. 2006

I was eagerly awaiting this album, and when it arrived in the mail today I quickly popped it in my stereo. Holy Cow. From the first tinkering of the piano on the intro to the last note of the final track, I was in awe. Did the Brats rip off the New York Dolls? Who knows. While the Brats can be compared to the Dolls on many levels, there is a punk like snottiness to the Brats that isn't as obvious with the Dolls. There is not one weak track on this CD. My only (minor) complaint is that it sounds like they transferred this from a vinyl record. However, this should not deter anyone from buying this CD immediately. This is rock and roll.

Absolute groin kicking, cheek/... kissin' muzak 7 Aug. 2003
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Ok a lot has been written about The Brats, they have become icons of a music age long gone, but not forgotten. Often compared to the New York Dolls, no way, the Brats have their own style, more raunchy, punchy and grab yer by the balls. Yes they were Punk (if that's the term) before it was invented and long before Johnny Rotten & Co were learning joined-up writing! Matheson's vocals come across as a mixture of Ray Davis and Jagger with a hint of someone else who's name escapes me. Some of the high notes (and bum notes) don't quite make it, but along with the rough n' ready mix it adds to the charm! Without doubt the driving force of the Brats is guitarist Brady, a true talent slashing and raunchy at the same time subtle guitar playing but showing no mercy. The rythmn section (for you dumbos out there, that's bass and drums) drive it all to the limit. Listening to Brats songs covered by other artists I can only say forget it, the originals are best. The Boys rendition of Sick On You is like a flacid member in comparison!
This album is unique, it should be in every one's collection.
Lost gem from the glam rock era 12 May 2012
By Justin G. - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
As much as I love the whole Hollywood hair metal scene from the mid `80s, I'm not a huge fan of its precursor, the UK glam rock scene of the `70s. Still, when I ran across the self-titled (and only) album from Hollywood Brats, something about the cover art and track listing demanded that I add it to my stack of purchases.

I'm glad I took a chance on this one, and not just because it's quite the rare find these days. Hollywood Brats are my kind of glam rock - the kind that actually rocks, and sounds kind of dangerous in an almost punk rock kind of way. They sound like the missing link between the New York Dolls and Hanoi Rocks, and look like it too. There's a raw, sensual swagger to these songs that makes up for their relative simplicity. You put this album on and can almost smell the booze, makeup and sweat.

Obviously I'm not a glam rock expert, but I really got a kick out of this album. It's fun, flamboyant and rocks pretty hard too. That's good enough for me!

Edition Notes: Cherry Red reissued Hollywood Brats in 1994. The reissue features remastered audio and extensive liner notes with lyrics, notes on each song, and essays by the band members. It's a nice reissue overall, especially by 1994 standards. I've definitely seen and heard worse in recent years!

great nose-thumbing music. smart-assery abounds with its good friend: butt-kicking rock. not much to think about when you're having this much fun.
