Product Description

The Voice Squad's album "Holly Wood" that was originally released in 1988, has now been re-released on the Tara Music label. This album was largely recorded in the 1000-year-old St. Kevin's church in Hollywood, Co. Wicklow, where the acoustics give an extra special aura to the recording. The Voice Squad, comprising members Phil Callery, Fran McPhail and Gerry Cullen, are an 'a cappella' group who sing songs in the old, very traditional style. Three voices in perfect unison, singing in the most unique and beautiful way. --This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

With Canada's Finest Kind, the Voice Squad are probably the best a cappella folk group around.

This album, however, is not a new one — it's simply 1993's Good People All with the tracks shuffled.

Still, with that album now deleted, and the second-hand prices inflated (as I write), this is the one to buy.

Their albums are pretty thin on the ground, their first, Many's the Foolish Youth, being the only other one I'm aware of.

They also appear on the DVD Come West Along the Road (singing "The Bonny Light Horseman"); and they have two stunning tracks singing harmony behind Niabh Parsons on John Renbourn's Traveller's Prayer, and two more on Arcady's Many Happy Returns.

I saw this 'cappela' group on an RTE compilation album, singing 'My Bonnie Light Horseman' and I was hooked. The CD is a very satisfying mix of traditional ballads, carols, and some songs which are less easy to 'classify'. The three mens voices harmonize and meld beautifully, making for compelling listening, though it is so relaxing you may just nodd off! I would recommend this album unreservedly, for it's dedicated quality, and also to enjoy something that is very different from so much samey 'mainstream' offerings.

If you are a fan of three-part harmonies and/or acapella, then this is worth buying.
Their version of "The Parting Glass" is up there with the Clancys and Wailin' Jennys. Intensely beautiful!

So beautiful! These guys are very talented. I have two of their albums and love them both! Wish they would tour in the US.
