Product Description

THE HOLLOW EARTH is an authentic, atmospheric throwback to the Victorian London of heavy fogs and Hansom Cabs, gasogenes and private Gentleman's Clubs; when Britannia ruled and gentleman's gentlemen were almost as common as gentlemen - the nostalgically revered London of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, Professor Moriarty and Jack The Ripper.

"Savile makes sure to give these gentleman protectors of the natural world all they can handle with some choice villains; from the evil human Necromancer, Nathaniel Parker, to the demon, Meringias, that acts as a sort of Captain and advance scout for the huge mass of horrors currently imprisoned within the bowels of the Earth (hence the Chapbook's title), that Parker seeks to set free upon an unsuspecting and very unprepared humanity, to a truly unforgettable and horrid homunculus. There are no wasted words in this fast-moving story. Savile manages to successfully evoke a wonderful sense of atmosphere and place, while contemporaneously managing to constantly build the conflict and tension, and swiftly move the action forward to a satisfying conclusion. The book, as is the Greyfriar's Gentleman's Club, is a successful m?lange of a Victorian English version of X-Files and Torchwood, with perhaps just a soup?on of Arthur Machen for flavor." Fear Zone

This edition contains the stories The Hollow Earth, A Madness of Ravens, and The Mechanisms of Grief.

Just my style! 13 Mar 2012

I confess, I love this sort of stuff. Combine the Victorian gentleman's club (echoes of Asimov's Black Widowers, and also, for some reason, it reminds me of Clarke's "Tales from the White Hart", although I don't think that's a good comparison for the stories themselves), with the supernatural/magical elements and you've got yourself a customer in me.

Wonderful characters that are ambiguously evil or good - more I cannot say without spoiling the stories. Just go and read it :)

Top!! 1 Mar 2012

I really enjoyed these tales; quirky, unusual, well written and they rattle on at a fair old pace. The characters are, given the brevity of the stories, very well drawn and the plots just weird enough to send a few frissons down the back of the neck!! Well done Mr S; more power to your (writing ) elbow!

Regards from an old horror story reader who thought he'd read it all.

Set in Victorian London - this series of stories is as much about the members of the Greyfriar's Gentleman's Club as the events that unfold themselves.

The setting is matched beatifully to it's time - the list of members are variously dashing, studious or dabblers in the occult, but all at the peak of wit, sartorial dress and apt to take a snifter and a cigar before sallying forth to battle evil.

There are clear signs of the direction the author takes with other works like the bestselling Silver (the religious overtones of the occult material), and Gods & Monsters (Demonic entities, the quest to demystify divine creation).

The 3 stories begin with a museum break in, a journey to the centre of the hollow earth and a classic godzilla-type rampage, followed by an imagined continuation of a classic folk tale that draws heavily from the authors penchant for the Golem, and ends with a poignant tale of Art vs Machines and the attempts of a broken man to bring love back to his empty life.

A brilliant series of tales that I hope to see more of once London Macabre is published.
