Biography

Hollie Cook was born and bred in West London, in a household dominated by music. She gravitated to the sounds of Marc Bolan, David Bowie and The Cure. With Sex Pistols’ Paul Cook as her dad, music was always around.

Revenge of the Killer Slits which she followed by ditching school to join the band on a six week US tour. Hollie was now an official Slit – Ari referred to her as the 'second singer' –… Read more in Amazon's Hollie Cook Store

Product Description

BBC Review

In 2006, Hollie Cook – daughter of Sex Pistols drummer Paul Cook – succumbed to her inherent rebellious impulses, dropping out of performing arts school to join reformed punk quartet The Slits as backing vocalist and keyboardist; she appeared on their EP, Revenge of the Killer Slits. Subsequent collaborations with Ian Brown and Jamie T have created a platform from which the singer can now release her self-titled debut.

Her label, Mr Bongo, refers to her sound as "tropical pop"; yet this record’s self-penned tracks break free of this relatively narrow genre. Much is owed to the wizardry of producer Prince Fatty, who magnificently weaves 60s-style dub, ska and reggae beats around Cook’s hauntingly beautiful psychedelic melodies.

There are few surprises across these nine tracks, but gems can be found nonetheless. Part of the album’s subtle charm is that it refuses to detour from formulaic reggae, Cook avoiding the genre-defying grandiosity many new acts employ, instead choosing to enhance rather than revolutionise. Her uplifting cover of The Shangri-Las’ (Remember) Walkin’ in the Sand captivates immediately, outshining the darker original – the album’s cornerstone, it’s a foetal festival anthem.

Cry (disco mix), featuring Horseman, is archetypal reggae: horn-packed and littered with sharp percussion, its vocal harmonies enslaving the listener to the rhythm. Sugar Water (Look at My Face) is a dub workout reminiscent of Beats International’s Dub Be Good to Me, whilst the muted basslines and scatty drums on debut single That Very Night lift the song from the melancholy of its lyrical content.

Milk and Honey is a welcomed inclusion, the Cook-featuring track previously an underground reggae hit for Prince Fatty; it gained wider attention courtesy of its use in US television show Grey’s Anatomy. The song stands as a showcase for this set’s lyrical themes: its message of salvation from darkness encapsulates the feel-good factor of what’s on offer.

The masterful presence of The Pioneers’ George Dekker, alongside Dennis Bovell and Omar, adds to this newcomer’s authenticity. Yet Cook’s own abundant talent comes through clearly enough, ensuring her debut is one of the most enjoyable reggae albums of 2011 so far.

So let's get the hype out of the way first, Hollie is the daughter of Paul Cook, who if you are 50, you might remember as the drummer from the sex pistols. So growing up she was surrounded by music and musicians which could explain the career choice and the fact she ditched performing arts school to go on tour with Ari Up and the reformed Slits. Can't blame her really.

The next steps on her career were collaborations with Ian Brown, Jamie T and most importantly Prince Fatty where the seeds of this album were sown. Now Hollie is a fan of classic reggae singers like Janet Kay and Phyllis Dillon as well as classic 60's girl groups and with Prince Fatty she has produced a fresh sounding reggae hybrid which at first we found a bit unsettling but soon learnt to love, Hollie calls it 'Tropical Pop'. Her voice has a sweet innocence to it and coupled with some authentic roots reggae riddims it's a lethal combination. We're telling you this album could be everywhere over the summer, and if it is, the warmer months will sound a whole lot better for it.

If that wasn't enough you also get the likes of Omar, Dennis bovell, George Dicker (Pioneers), Style Scott and Horseman all involved for good measure. Now 'Milk and Honey' might not need an introduction as it got widespread radio play from the Prince Fatty album and featured on Grey's Anatomy but this album is far from a one trick pony. We are also loving 'Cry(Disco Mix)' which juxtaposes Hollies sweet vocals with some gruffer ruffer male vocals, her immense version of the Shangri-Las' 'Walkin In The Sand' and the affarirs of the heart winner 'That Very Night', though the album is full of crackers start to finish.

Wonderful 15 Aug 2011
Format:Audio CD
Charming record. Great production, lovely voice. Reggae with grace and originality but a bit short at 35 mins. Could have done with dub versions for the full 5 stars. One or two songs are a bit weak but definitely worth buying.

I must confess I'd never heard of Hollie Cook until I downloaded the free Mr.Bongo sampler from Amazon last week. I found I loved the two tracks of hers on that album and was inspired to go for her own album on download and I'm so glad I did :-) ... Its a real blast of reggae how it used to be when I loved it back in the 70's .. Others have compared her vocals to Janet Kay (think "Silly Games") and I can see what they mean . Tuneful, Chilled and altogether a real quality album that I'm looking forward to playing as we move into summer .. All in all a real nice surprise and at a bargain price too (£3.99 at time of review) .
