Product Description

Product Description

John Charles Ryle s best-known works have been reissued and widely read over many years. The fine qualities of his writings have ensured that his books are still popular and useful. This present volume has become a classic work and is known and loved by many throughout the world. In days when evangelical preachers are accused of being either superficial or dull, we have here a great example from one who was neither of these things. As Bishop Ryle explains and applies his texts with his customary simplicity and directness, the reader will find his conscience pricked and his soul examined. Ryle s Holiness has become essential reading on this most important subject and the first chapter on sin has rarely been bettered.

About the Author

John Charles Ryle was appointed as the first Bishop of Liverpool in 1880 and was the leader of the Evangelical Party in the Church of England for more than half a century. He is highly regarded for his plain and lively writings on practical and spiritual themes, and their usefulness and impact have been consistently recognized and remain as wise and relevant today as when he first wrote them. Other titles by Ryle also published by Evangelical Press are Churches Beware!; Daily Readings from all Four Gospels; and Practical Religion.

This book has taught me many things. JC Ryle is a man who loves your soul, he has written in such a way as to build up the readers love for Christ and loathing of his own sin. I would whole heartedly recomend this book to any person who loves his soul, but not to the casual reader. Reading a chapter a week and then meeting up with a friend to chat through it worked very well for me.

People like James Packer often refer back to this book - it is truly a fantastic book - very challenging and thought provoking. It is the only book of this type that I return to again and again. The chapter on Lots wife is truly one of the most thought provoking I have ever read. If you haven't read it - only one thing to suggest - go ahead, I dont think you will be disappointed...

If you enjoy the "meat of the word" as it was once called you will enjoy this book. Without any extremes of "fundamentalism" in its worst sense Ryle gives the thoughful reader a feast to ponder on and to practise. This is a book to challenge any believer however long they have been treading the pathway of faith. I have owned a copy of this book for the past fifty years and have enjoyed returning to it every so often. The reader does not have to read consecutively but can if he/she wishes dip into at any place almost as a daily devotional reading. The most benefit however, comes from reading it consecutively as it unfolds its powerfufl and challenging message.
