More About the Author

Having fun with my writing, and connecting with readers--that's what having a career as a mystery writer means to me. And I LOVE what I do!

I am from New Mexico, in the Southwestern U.S. and that is where my stories are set. It began in 1985 when I started writing my first novel, without much clue how to go about it. Two years and 500 pages later, when I finally typed 'The End,' I felt a huge rush of excitement. I entered the novel in the Southwest Writers annual contest and took third place. While that first book made the rounds of publishers, I started work on a second one. Seeing my books in print would take longer than anticipated but in 1991 I decided to take the plunge and write full-time. And I moved to Hawaii. This was also about the time I turned back to my first real love--mysteries. Although those first two novels have never been published, the experience of writing them provided wonderful practice for my craft and showed me that I did have the patience and endurance to complete novel-length work.

After publishing ten of my Charlie Parker mysteries, I decided to branch out with a second series and I created the character of Samantha Sweet. One of the ways in which I earned a little extra pocket money during my high school years was to bake and decorate cakes--hence, a career for Samantha based on my own experiences.

In 2009 I switched publishers and was off on a new adventure, seeing all of my books made available for Kindle and the other ebook devices that were just beginning to take off in the book world. It's been an exciting time in publishing and I'm loving the new formats and the ability to personally connect with readers all over the world via my newsletter and my website at connieshelton.com.

3.0 out of 5 stars Too Short 30 May 2010
By Marilynn Bachorik - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
I didn't realize this book was a novella when I bought it on Kindle, so I was disappointed at its brevity. It's your typical Charlie Parker story--light & entertaining, but it ends abruptly. Possibly could have been developed into a full length book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Charming Chistmas Read 11 July 2011
By Brian Jackson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
Charlie, Drake, and Rusty are back in a charming Christmas read. I love the holidays, and nothing is better than a holiday cozy. If you liked the other Charlie Parker books than this is a must read. Decorating the yard, visits from inlaws, and even red and green chili sauce are all part of the New Mexico traditions that add layers of texture to this tale. And these's also a murder, of course. Hey, it's the summer, but this story made me feel the chill in the air that signals the start of the holidays. I highly recommend this fun read.

Be forewarned that this is a novella, so it's shorter than the usual Charlie Parker read. Still, it was well worth the price of admission.

Connie Shelton's books are very entertaining. All of her characters are easy to get to know and fun to read. I always find myself wondering what adventure they went on next at the end of a book!
4.0 out of 5 stars Fond oif anything "Charlie Parker" 2 Mar. 2014
By racelady - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a novella attached to the Charlie Parker mystery series. As a Charlie Parker fan, and having read every novel in the series, I had to read this too. Not very fond of short stores, but if it involves Charlie and her brother and their agency, I recommend it.
