Book Description

Who are you going to call if it all goes wrong on holiday?

Meet Doctor Ben MacFarlane. His job is to bring people back to Britain after holiday disasters, gap year crises, embarrassing incidents on business trips and all the other things that can go wrong when we head off overseas. Holiday SOS is his story – a year in the life of a very British flying doctor.

Follow Ben as he grabs his medical bag and flies to glamorous locations – helping to pick up the pieces after another holiday emergency. Dramatic, hilarious or wildly unexpected, for flying doctors, emergency medicine doesn’t just take place in intensive care wards – it can happen just across the aisle on your next flight.

By Katharine Kirby TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
This book, which sadly seems to be on the way out, i.e. not currently available, is in fact an interesting collection of stories written, with the help of an author, by Ben Macfarlane, a lively minded doctor who describes his time working with a firm who repatriate sick and injured patients from all over the world back to the UK. Altogether enjoyable and satisfying, his anecdotes and self deprecating narratives which have been 'doctored' to avoid giving away any secrets are an exciting read with a side serving of a love story.

The warm way in which he writes about his patients and the descriptive passages telling us of his pleasure in visiting new and exciting places makes the reader feel as if they are along for the ride. I shall certainly feel more confident when taking a holiday knowing that someone like him may be dispatched to help me home should things go awry. The firm that he works for are a jolly friendly lot with sympathy and friendship in spades.

A life affirming book that deserves to be reprinted or even made into a tv programme!

By S. King
Ben MacFarlane lifts the lid on what happens when hapless tourists have to be repatriated from their holidays or overseas business trips.

Considering the book can be a little gory at times (thank goodness it has no pictures), it is also a touching, insightful and very funny introduction into the ins and outs of getting people home. Throughout he meets an interesting cross-section of the human race, from teenage drug mules, to middle-aged married men who accidentally find out that they've met a "woman" who didn't turn out to be quite as expected.

This is an easy read, very compelling (I read it over two evenings) and ideal for reading on trains etc, as although the chapters are reasonably long, there are obvious break points within them.

It should also be required reading for anyone who has ever considered going on holiday abroad without travel insurance and anyone who has ever seen cabin crew as just trolley dollies. Be prepared to have your eyes opened to the importance of both.

5.0 out of 5 stars Holiday SOS - interesting vignettes 7 Aug. 2009
This is a book by somebody who is not a natural author, he is a doctor who does medical repatriations for insurance companies. I found the book very interesting and difficult to put down.

4.0 out of 5 stars Read this and feel good 30 Oct. 2009
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This is a pretty light and easy read, written in a very accessible style (and a bit badly proof read in parts) that will make you feel good for two reasons - a) if you are on holiday and insured then help is not far away in the form of Dr Ben MacFarlane and b) there are some genuinely decent people out there trying to help others.

I was actually a bit moved by this book which left me thinking that Dr Ben McFarlane (if that is his real name) is such a decent bloke and just who you need when things are going badly wrong from a health point of view.

The action is fast paced and not too repetitive (other than he travels and picks up patients but that is kind of obivous) with some really distressing stories but heartening too.

It's not like 'Direct Red' or Atul Gawande's books, it isn't meant to be, but it is a worthwhile read - really very good indeed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good 28 Sept. 2010
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
You often read about people being injured on holiday and how expensive it is to get them repatriated to this country following medical treatment - this is what happens from a doctor's point of view. The author spent several years travelling abroad to accompany injured people returning to the UK. When you've read this book you'll realise why it is essential to have comprehensive insurance cover when you travel abroad for any reason.

There are poignant, amusing and downright unbelievable cases described in this book. There were times when I found myself in tears and times when I was laughing out loud. I also enjoyed the descriptions of office life where there is a huge sense of team spirit. I really enjoyed reading this book and finding out the sort of things which can happen to people abroad whether the trip was for business or pleasure. If you like this sort of slice of life book then you will love this as it is written in an easy conversational style.

5.0 out of 5 stars look both ways! 20 July 2009
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I read a lot of this book on the plane out to Turkey last week and the rest by the pool - it certainly made me look both ways before crossing the road out there! We were on a plane years ago with someone in a stretcher at the back hidden by curtains, we obviously wanted to respect their privacy but were also desperately curious about who they were or what had happened to them. After reading this we finally we know what might have been going on. Many of the stories are desperately sad - the little old lady all on her own is a real tear-jerker. But there are some real laughs as well. Top line - 'In the unlikely event of an emergency landing .... your captain and cabin crew will be exiting first from here, here and here.' Really enjoyed this - and flew home yesterday without any incident. Phew.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Read 20 Oct. 2009
This book is fantastic - I absolutely loved it and was somewhat disappointed to finish it. No medical insights are required to enjoy this book, but if you are in the medical profession beware: you may find you start quietly observing random people in the street for potential MIs...
