Best Diet, 20 Mar 2006
I have yo-yoed dieted for over 15 years. I finally had enough and wanted to educate myself as much as possible about just how the body burns fat and how food is converted to fat and so on. I wish I had just found this book first, but the Internet research confirmed all Holford had to say.The book is comprehensive. For those that just want to jump in, there's is no need to read it all, just Parts 1&3 would do - it summarises the entire principle and basic science, and the latter part has the menus and recipes. I believe we have trained ourselves to believe that nothing less than fast weight loss is acceptable or a 'good diet'. I have fallen into that trap and even now, highly educated about nutrition and now educated about fat burning, I still get the most joy of a rapid weight loss. However, I bought fat% scales and if I lose weight but not fat, I know I'm doing something wrong. Following this healthy principle, this is NOT a lose weight fast diet. The foundation is nutrition, as Holford is a nutritionist (I recommend his Optimum Nutrition Bible as well, which I've used for years). So what he does is show you how to lose the most FAT safely and nutritionally. This sytem means you're more likely to lose it and keep it off for a long time (or forever if you stick to healthy lifestyle), but also you should feel great and look better. I have lost weight on all sorts of diets. Once I'm off, the weight creeps back on - but worse, I'm never happy about the control food seemed to have over me. Low GL is the first time ever that I feel I have more energy. What a bonus! I kept reading it from others but never experienced it myself. The only part of the system I don't agree with 100% is his thoughts on exercise. They're fine, but I don't feel as confident about his knowledge in this area compared to his vast knowledge of nutrition. The part I agree with is the fat burning zone. My one quibble with the book is the layout of menus and recipes. They're fine, but I would have prefered that the GLs were clearly given for food combinations. I feel it would provide long term education. As a vegetarian, there were more than enough meal options. But a seperate Vegetarian Menu would have been much easier to work with. Also, I think that busy people might struggle a little. A 'busy person's' version seems essential. But you can't argue with Holford for not having time to eat every few hours; that is the way the body works. It's not Holford, it's science. Otherwise, I will never recommend another diet to anyone again. THIS is a plan for life. I've lost 5lbs in 2 weeks, but that is NOT important (because it could be muscle I've lost), what is important is that I've lost 3% fat, compared with the same weight loss 2 weeks prior on a low calorie diet but only .5% fat loss. Good luck to all you prospective fat losers.
