Not a major EP, but notable for its ambient feel 11 Sept. 2014
By Christopher Culver - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Leading up to their first album JUST FOR A DAY, the British shoegazing band Slowdive released three EPs. HOLDING OUR BREATH, which appeared in June 1991, was the third of these. This Amazon listing describes the original release, but it's worth pointing out that all of Slowdive's EP material has been made available at possibly more affordable price on the 2CD reissue of their debut album.

Already we find the band at its full maturity. All the hallmarks of the shoegazing genre are here: submerged vocals, an unreal level of guitar flange, and slow, stepwise lines. What sets this EP apart from the band's other work of the era is, except for the opening "Catch the Breeze" (which would later appear on their first album), it is very slow and spacey. Indeed, it is the most ambient work the band would record until their controversial (but worthwhile) 1995 album PYGMALION. "Shine" is sung entirely by Rachel Goswell, her vocals are so buried that they act only as pure sound. "Albatross" is distinguished by some very prominent drumming by Simon Scott, a musician who ordinarily remained in the background between the Halstead and Goswell guitar assault.

This EP isn't quite up to the level of JUST FOR A DAY, which I rank as one of the most moving rock albums of all time. Plus, one of the tracks here you'll already have if you get the album first as recommended. Nonetheless, those who fall in love with Slowdive's albums will want to check out their EPs as well.
