Biography

A little more than a decade ago, a hard rocking trio from South Africa, changed its name from Saron Gas to Seether and disembarked for the United States. It was, according to frontman Shaun Morgan, "an emotional decision, by no means easy. Taking that big step was terrifying, but I feel that the decision we made, as tough as it was, was ultimately the correct one."

I was worried all the way through the build up to this album, primarily about Wind-up's tie on the band, and their influence over the album. Their influence is clear if only due to the solid production and lack of truely heavy songs. That said, this is not a happy, overly positive album, and tear jerkers are rife as the album progresses. It's not a light album either, with Fur Cue, Forsaken, and Desire for need providing some much needed grunt. On hearing samples of the album I was also worried that songs such as Tonight, Master of Disaster, and Here and Now were just bland portrayals of bland pop songs. I couldn't be more wrong, and there isn't a weak track, with Shaun Morgan's writing at its best and his singing at it's most emotional. The perfect comeback and I hope to see them in the UK soon.

I've been following the career of South African rockers Seether for a while now, I regularly listen to their earlier album releases on my iPod, specifically the "Karma and Effect" album which for me has been their strongest album overall.
Fast forward six years then and now we have "Holding Onto Strings Better Left To Fray," this their fifth studio album.

Working with producer Brendan O' Brien, Seether have delivered their most mainstream sounding record to date, with just a few tracks testament to their earlier alternative metal roots.
It's actually a very enjoyable mix, opening rocker "Fur Cue" sets a nice tone, "No Resolution" continues in the same vein before ballad "Here And Now" slows down the pace. For me this song is easily the bands best ballad since "Broken" and should be considered as a single release.
"Country Song" was an odd choice for first single in my view, but no doubt the tracks definitely a grower and you'll soon be humming along to the guitar line.
"Pass Slowly" is the saddest song the band have done for a while before the excellent "Roses" shows up at track nine.
Those of you looking for some anger and aggression finally find it in the albums closing section, especially on track "Desire for Need," which is fast, heavy and melodic.
After the first listen I was left with mixed feelings, but I've learned not to judge a record on first listen and now having played it many times I have come to appreciate that this is in fact a very solid record, far superior to 2007's "Finding Beauty In Negative Spaces."

In summary then, "Holding Onto Strings Better Left To Fray" is a decent return to form for Seether.

As always, wonderful to listen to when you're angry with the world. Beautifully balanced lyrics between the heavier tracks and the ballads. Very distinctive sound. This is especially highlighted on the DVD, where the band play a completely unplugged set. However, this did put me off seeing them live when they toured the UK, as the bombastic energy and sheer versatility of instrumentation was absent. I probably won't watch the DVD again. Otherwise, album recommended.

This album is an absolute classic; Country Song is probably my favourite song from the album, and after seeing them live on Monday reminded me how fantastic this album is! The tunes are a cross between Foo Fighters esque rock, and a grungey rock style Nirvana, but I would definitely pick this album up and add it to your collection!
