3.0 out of 5 stars Good for a beginner's crash course, not much depth., 17 Jun 2007
By Mr. D. Burrow "David Burrow" (Leeds, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Having read all 3 volumes of `Harrington on Hold-em' (must read material if you're serious about playing hold-em well) I thought I'd also give this book a go.

The book brushes on a number of concepts and theories that HOH and other books go into, (suited connectors, pot odds, etc) but in nowhere near as much depth. To be honest, having read the book there's wasn't really much else, if anything that I felt I'd learned. And although Daniel Negreanu is considered one of the best poker players around, and has far more experience of the game than I do, I would argue that some of his theories are somewhat strange, especially how he advises beginners to stick to fixed, very large raises when they pick up a hand (almost robotic like).

In summary, if you're very new to the game and want a crash course in some useful theories you can read in a day or two then go for this. If you have more patience and really want to scratch beneath the surface go for the HOH series (volume 2 if I had to pick one of the three).

2.0 out of 5 stars A weak holding, 20 Jun 2008
I've been playing social and online poker for about 15 years with moderate success, and have read at about two dozen poker books, including the Harringtons, Sklanskys, Phil Gordons and so on.
I am a great fan of Daniel Negreanu in both his player and pundit roles, but I'm afraid this was a highly disappointing book. It's more like a scrap book of ideas and comments, cobbled together with no particular structure and barely any depth. Also, don't be fooled by the page count. Many of the pages are half full with the various "pearls" of the wisdom mentioned in the title. I finished the whole thing in a few hours and didn't feel I'd learned anything of particular substance. I'm sure the publishers and Daniel were happy to cash-in on the name Negreanu, but that's exactly what this book felt like - a cash-in. I really wouldn't waste your money on these "pearls".

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally! A poker book which looks other places!, 15 Feb 2007
By Joshua Sugarman "The Sugardaddy!" (Stafford, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I've read many books on how to play different hands in different situations but as any pro will tell you, that's not poker! Poker includes a massive psychological aspect which (apart from Caro), no one seems dare to touch.

This book isn't a "bible" but merely a helpful reminder of how to have an edge in the psychological game! It explains how reading a player isn't about looking for tells but about noting betting patterns etc...

It reiterates rules such as you need to know what your opponent thinks you have and play accordingly etc... These are methods which no other book deals with in detail.

Added to the helpfulness of this book comes Negreanu's funny self slotting in the odd joke here and there just to lighten the mood! The book is split up by chapters and then rules within chapters so its VERY easy to read, very well written and very informative!

I would DEFINITELY recommend this book to anyone, novice or advanced players, simply because it includes information which can be understood and can be helpful to all.

Just can't wait for his super system rival book next year :D

3.0 out of 5 stars great if your a beginner
I thought this book would include some kind of special game plan thought of by Daniel, he is a great player but doesn't really show it in this book.
