Biography

Tom Waits, according to the esteemed American critic Robert Hilburn, is "clearly one of the most important figures of the modern pop era". It's been just over 30 years since Tom Waits made his recording debut. In that time his music has taken adventurous twists and turns, from confessional country-blues and jazz-flavored lounge to primal rock and avant-garde musical theatre.

5.0 out of 5 stars beautiful, 6 Jun 2001
This review is from: Hold on (Audio CD)
Tom Waits's song is a hymn to following one's dreams and sticking to one's beliefs, even if these at the moment seem to lead nowhere but to enormous difficulties. His voice is coarse and raw, full of contradictory emotions: it is tender yet harsh, sweet yet mature. He sings about simple things, 'a dimestore watch' and 'a ring made from a spoon'; but life is made of simple things. The objects which one values most are those objects that have no inherent value per se except for that bestowed upon them by their owner. When Tom Waits sings about such things he is singing about one of the core basics that make up human life. He admits that life going wrong is the norm rather than the exception; but yet he pushes the listener to hold on. Most of all, Waits sings about faith. Faith is what makes one go on living, whether it being faith in God or money, everything or nothing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great one from the master, 15 Jun 2000
By "cquence23" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Hold on (Audio CD)
Tom Waits has always has a knack for creating moody, melancholy masterpieces. This track is no exception. A dark and gruff country flavored ditty, "Hold On" is a logical progression from his previous work. Hope and Despair seem to dance a slow Texas two-step here, as Tom reminds us over a plodding, almost dirge-like western guitar sound to "...take my hand, I'm standing right there, you gotta hold on..." Beautiful imagery, great atmospheric music, plus the addition of two non-album tracks make this one worth buying for sure.

If Waits had only written 'Buzz Fledderjohn' his place as a master American song writer would be assured.
