5.0 out of 5 stars Genuinely Original Cover Versions, 30 Oct 2005
By A Customer
As if the brilliance of Christopher O'Riley's first set of Radiohead arrangments on True Love Waits was not enough, he has returned with an even more beautiful follow up.

As a true Radiohead lover, the only thing I felt True Love Waits might be missing was a few of the most popular Radiohead classics. So when I saw the track list for Hold Me To This included Street Spirit (Fade Out), No Surprises and Paranoid Android, it was like my prayers were answered.

I'd say Paranoid Android is O'Riley's finest working. The track is immensely complex in terms of chord pattern and comprises three movements ranging from melancholy harmony through to discord, a trait of many a latter Radiohead composition. O'Riley's arrangment is fascinating and each time you listen to it, there's more to discover about the brilliant way he has so cleverly adapted Radiohead's version. A further highest point of the high points is 2+2=5. Taken from Hail to the Thief, this is another track that shows off the remarkable writing talents of Radiohead, placing them nearer Benjamin Britten than classic rock. Again O'Riley's enigmatic interpretation of the various moods, that obssesively work their way throughout this piece, is uniquely captured.

This album is highly recommended for anyone keen on experiencing something truly original in a world of increasing uniformity.

1.0 out of 5 stars If it ain't broke don't fix it, 7 Sep 2008
I received this CD as a gift and found it uncomfortable listening. Firstly I want to make it very clear that I absolutely love Radiohead, they are one of my favourite bands. However, they are a very unique group who are renowned for their experimental electronic sound and Thorm Yorke's haunting vocals. Christopher O'Riley is clearly a very talented man who must have spent a lot of time arranging these songs for piano, but sadly they just don't work. Radiohead's catalogue is just too complex to translate well onto piano, and the result is a jarring sound straining to be as good as the original songs. It's nothing against the piano, I adore classical music, but I'd rather keep my Rachmaninoff separate from my Radiohead.
