Product Description

Review

The text is knowledgeable and informs us in an easy manner while the catalogue of the artist's work is divided into subject matter with each print beautifully reproduced and explained. This is a wonderful book that is long overdue... --Ryedale Gazette & Herald, 7th Oct 2009

As a publication, Hokusai by Matthi Forrer is in itself a work of art. Its scope, detail, and meticulous production, all combine to create a book that is beautiful and sumptuous as it is readable. --Living Design September 2011

One thing that's not obvious, from reading the publisher's description of this book, is that it was first published for the Royal Academy exhibition in 1991. It was intended to accompany that exhibition, so the choice of prints was restricted to those that could be exhibited at the Academy, and the notes accompanying each print are intended to guide the reader through that exhibition. A reader approaching the book as a stand alone publication, rather than an accompanying text to an event, could lead to a certain amount of criticism. When approached as an exhibition catalogue, however, it is an excellent resource, and although there is some repetition this is to be expected when you consider that the text was placed alongside the prints when they were put on display at the RA - visitors to an exhibition view each exhibit in isolation and can't view every catalogue entry to find all of the information they need to understand what's in front of them.

This is an excellent introduction to Hokusai covering a very good selection (well over 100 pieces) of his work, along with a short biography (basically the opening chapter). The pictures are beautiful and very high quality, with all of them being at least half a page in size and many of them a full page. I don't understand how you could describe any of them as being faded or poor quality - the author does note under many of them that there are slightly different versions available due to different printings but that doesn't make the photos inaccurate in any way. Each piece has about half a page of accompanying text giving some background and explanation. Some of these could be a little better, basically just summarizing what can be seen in the picture but many of them give interesting additional details regarding the location, composition and symbolism of various pieces. The book itself is well bound with a good quality cover, and at over 200 pages is excellent value for money.

Bought this book for the prints mainly. The images are smaller than I'd hoped in the book (most are under half the page in size.. even the most famous). The colour reproduction isn't great, the level of detail is terrible and the images look a bit faded. Certainly not "beautifully reproduced" as the description claims. Also not a particularly comprehensive collection of his work.. was hoping for more.
