A Minor Masterpiece 4 Aug 2004
Format:Audio CD
Probably not quite as electrifying as the other two LPs in the trio (Bright Lights and Pour Down), but, let's face it, the man sets himself some extraordinary standards. There's songs on these 3 LPs that I believe are up there with the best popular music ever recorded.

On Hokey Pokey, the folk influence is cut with greater experimentation than Bright Lights, and it works well in patches. For example, Smiffy's Glass Eye and Mole in a Hole are merely superb.

HP contains probably my two most played RT songs - the jaunty, extended metaphor that is the title track, with fantastic harmony singing, and the impossibly moving Never Again. I recently saw RT live and he played Never Again. There were people in their 30s and 40s openly crying, such is the songs power.

The playing is brilliant throughout, and Linda hits her usual awesome peaks.

Buy, buy, buy.

After the mighty Bright Lights cd..this came ( on first listen ) as a real disappointment. Was almost going to give it away. BUT, after a few more go's, it began to show its strengths. Very well recorded good tunes, with often humorous lyrics, and all in all extremely listenable. In fact, I play it much more than Bright Lights. Its a fun lively cd...the darkness is in there too..but often put to a jaunty tune.I can fully see why people dismiss it as too lightweight...but its not. Obviously get Bright Lights first , and Pour Down too..but dont forget this little gem. Its one you'll keep playing.

Often overlooked 11 Jun 2007
Format:Audio CD
Because it came out after "I want to see the Bright Lights Tonight" and "Pour down like Silver" this album tends to be overlooked and underestimated by a lot of people including myself. This album is much lighter than either of those albums and the songs are not as dark as anything on those albums, but RT being RT he does manage to insert a few dark references into this album such as "Smiffy's Glass Eye" " Never Again and "The sun never shines on the poor"

I also find that his guitar work is not as audible on this album compared to others and the accordion and violin are far more in evidence. This is strange given that RT is one of the greatest guitarists in any genre but then again this allows for the lyrics to be more accessible and easy to discern.

This is a jewel of an album and one too easy to miss because of the genius of its predecessor and successor. Please don't let yourself do so.
