Product Description

Product Description

Hoggin' the Stage features two classic gigs of The Groundhogs in 1971 at Leeds and 1976 at Stockholm. It is accepted as the greatest live Groundhogs album for the period and features nearly all of the classic Groundhogs material. The 1971 gig features the original line-up of Tony McPhee, Pete Cruikshank and Ken Pustelnic.

About the Artist

The Groundhogs actually started in the mid-sixties as the backing band for John Lee Hooker. Their first album as a stand alone band, "Scratching the surface", came out in 1968 and over the next few years they released many albums, including their classic albums Thank Christ for the bomb and Split. Tony McPhee continues recording and playing to this day, both as The Groundhogs and as a solo performer.

18 of 18 people found the following review helpful By Monti Alessandro on 15 April 2009
Format: Audio CD
What a great reissue is this! Finally we have this double album back on cd with extra tracks, compiled by Tony McPhee himself. The Groundhogs were without a doubt one of the best British bands of the 70's: adventurous and exploratory they improved their sound year after year from the blues beginnings to the later prog-oriented records. But they never lost those blues roots: you can hear some of the wildest post-Hendrix jams here! The famous Leeds concert from 1971 (when they supported the Stones) is an amazing document and the endless "Still A Fool" has many unbelievable moments. The Groundhogs' free-form improvisations are so far from many pointless jams of the era: they're always surprising and engaging, sometimes creating a real song-structure on the spot. Tony McPhee's sound is unique stretching his guitar to the very limit with distortion & compression and a personal phrasing. The welcome surprises on this Talking Elephant edition are the great radio version of "Music Is The Food Of Thought", one of the greatest Groundhogs' songs from "Who Will Save The World", a gem of an album from 72 rarely heard "in concert"; and the excellent & raw segments of the Stockholm gig from 1976. Different line-ups but usual stunning performances. Here's definitely one of the best live albums in rock you can get!

Groundhogs dates back a long long time and they're still active today. This album captures them in their earlier days, giving proof of their energetic, exciting performances. Tony McPhee has been called a white Jimi Hendrix but that doesn't do either of them justice, McPhee is a wonderful player in his own right.
