Review

"more than just one of the best debuts of the year; one of the best books of the year. It should do for Aberdeen what Trainspotting did for Edinburgh" (Louise Welsh Herald )

"'Trainspotting on a sugar rush' has been my pat description when recommending this spirited debut novel... a remarkable story of love and loyalty, of fierce passion and scabrous wit, full of characters whose broad vernacular is direct and expressive. This is about a culture with just as much right to be called British as that of middle-class suburbia" (Jonathan Ruppin Foyles Best Fiction of 2012 )

"Despite the grinding poverty, drug addiction, alcoholism and violence, this isn't a relentlessly dark book. It's an honest one: honest about the things that go wrong and about the lives that people who don't often get to be the stars in fiction really do lead... [Hudson] gives us, without a shred of hipster cynicism, the hope and tough warmth for which she has such a sharp eye" (Jenn Ashworth Guardian )

"This is the poverty trap writ large, the authentic working-class experience in all the mess and glory of the giro queue, drug and booze dependency, and gallows humour... Kerry Hudson's early life was like this. What a brilliant thing to turn the chaos and trauma of a hectic childhood into a debut novel as colourful, funny, joyful and compelling as this" (Nicola Barr Observer )

"Kerry Hudson's fine, eloquent debut novel traces the peripatetic childhood of Janie Ryan...her tale is full of warmth and bittersweet humour" (David Evans Financial Times )

5.0 out of 5 stars A very special book 8 July 2012
Format:Paperback
It sounds cliched to say it, but from the moment I started reading this book I couldn't put it down. The story and its characters are completely addictive. Every page is bursting with colour and the story transports you into a world filled with vivid characters and a rich, complex, fragile environment of both brutality and joy, it is both heart breaking and affirming. Really brilliant stuff. The book has hard hitting content but is infused with humour and a family that you totally surrender your heart to and who will stay with you after the book is finished. I really can't recommend this book more highly, it deserves to reach a massive audience, not only because it is a fantastic read but I believe it also a socially critical book in providing a glimpse into the world, circumstances and experiences of people who live on the fringes of society, whose voices we so rarely hear. It should be a compulsory read for all politicians and policy makers as well as fiction lovers around the world! A gem of a book to be treasured, shared and learnt from for years to come. Thank you to the author for giving us some a remarkable, joyful, moving and provoking book. I look forward to many more!

5.0 out of 5 stars Read this book 29 Aug 2012
By LMC
Format:Paperback
This is a cracking read. Told first-person from the moment of birth it takes you to some pretty dark corners of British life. It's unflinching in its treatment of the subject matter - domestic abuse and extreme poverty among them - and the nicely-played vein of humour is never used as an easy exit.
It is beautifully written with finely observed detail throughout. The plot is understated and all the better for that - this is not a book that is seeking to throw you around for the hell of it but instead stays focused on its characters and their lives and they emerge all the more vivid as a result. Understated is not code for "dull" - the pages fly by and you get so caught up by the characters so quickly that by the end you have the rather perverse desire to remain in their grim world.
Tony Hogan the character is truly vile. "Tony Hogan" the book is a triumph. You'll love it.

I read this in a day. That wasn't the plan. It was addictive, heartbreaking and I may have had something in my eye on occasions. Great book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not my usual choice of book 1 Dec 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
but I loved it. I found it to be compulsive reading, the characters although from an unfamiliar world were unbelievably real. Reading this book has increased my understanding of how the 'have not's' cope in the cruel world we live in.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gritty and gripping 20 Sep 2012
Format:Paperback
I loved this beautifully written, sharply observed novel. Despite the mostly grim circumstances of the feisty heroine there was plenty of warmth and humour throughout. Janie is an original and engaging voice, easy to relate to in spite of everything, and it was interesting (and horrifying in parts) to read a story about people on the outskirts of society - the sort of people we perhaps turn away from in real life - feel uncomfortable being around.

The Yarmouth setting is well-observed, and the relationships - though flawed - are believable, especially between daughter and mum. You'll be rooting for Janie from the word go.

Tony Hogan is gritty and gripping, funny and moving, and I'd recommend it to anyone looking for something a bit different.

Some great references to 80s music too!

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant novel from a rising star 5 July 2012
Format:Paperback
This debut novel has all the ingredients of a real page turner. It is witty with more than a touch of sadness. It is gritty and down to earth in a pose that makes us immediately care for its characters in a book that is both sincere and ultimately heartfelt. With a second novel already under her belt keep an eye out for Kerry Hudson as she is set to go far.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nomadic novel 19 May 2013
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I'd read a few promising reviews of this title, and noted the award recognition. For me, the narrative style moved around as much as the plot, inconsistent and a bit rambling at times. The characters are strong and memorable but the geographical shifts were too fractured for me. Hudson's voice is distinct but I hope her next novel will be sharper in focus.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Title in the World, Ever! 9 May 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I thoroughly enjoyed this. The title rocks and the book doesn't disappoint. It's gritty and poignant with strong characters. I love that much of it is set in Scotland. I think this a bold, brave and brilliant debut and I look forward to reading more of this writer's work. Kicking myself that I didn't get to see her read at Polari!
