Classic Hoffnung 6 Jun 2003
Format:Audio CD
This audio gem is an absolute must for Hoffnung fans. Containing the famous Charles Richardson interviews and the Oxford Union "bricklayer" speech, it will have you laughing until you cry. As a Hoffnung fan since I was at school, it was a delight to listen to him again after so many years. Immaculate.

You need to know nothing of Hoffnungs work to appreciate his surreal and humanistic sense of humour. These tapes never fail to help lighten me up when I need a good laugh. The interviews with Charles are the highlight for me. Worth six stars!

A neglected gem 18 Nov 2006
Format:Audio CD
This is great comedy. At turns surreal, observational and improvisational with superb timing and delivery.

Any fan of anything funny at all should give this a whirl.

Soon you'll also wonder why Hoffnung is not a household name along with others of his time.

Ignore the absence of hype. Get it and chuckle.

A CLASSIC
I have always adored this man's comedy, and it's a treat to have these routines collected here. The "interviews" with Charles Richardson are gloriously dotty - easily as inventive... Read more

Bricklayer
An unmissable classic. It even contains the bricklayer's story - told as only he could tell it.

Worth it for 'The Builder' alone
I only bought this specifically for the story of 'The Builder' which was delivered to the Oxford Union after what sounds as though it must have been a very good dinner! Read more

Some things are best remembered
I bought these CDs because of the bricklayer's story. I remembered that from when I was a child and a friend used to play it on vinyl. Read more

buy this for the Oxford Union speech

A mixture of the dire and the inspired
Gerard Hoffnung died in the year I was born -- 1959 -- at the absurdly young age of 34. Today he is best known for his cartoons and THAT speech to the Oxford Union, recorded a... Read more
