The differentiated textbooks are a huge selling point for those teaching a broad-ability range. The support materials are creative and varied and will easily maintain interest. (Times Educational Supplement)

Excellent. This series has now become the mainstay of the department. Teachers feel very positive about using the series as a teaching resource. (Mr Dashley, Earlham County High School)

Book Description

An exciting Key Stage 3 resource for teaching and learning about the issues and events that characterise medieval Britain. The narrative never lets go of the period's story, providing opportunities to examine the big picture and investigate particular topics, including kingship, health and medicine, the role of the Church and life in towns and the country.

History is a hard subject - of this teachers and students alike are all too well aware - because it involves lots of writing and complicated words. John Clare, renowned writer and teacher, has certainly got away from this complaint in his Year 7 textbook (which accompanies the mainstream version). Tasks are very simple(and I work in an inner city school), some might feel too much so - 'count how many times this word appears and then write (or copy) a sentence including it' for example. I'm tempted to feel that I could have come up with this myself - if I buy an additional textbook I'm hoping for some fresh ideas. Sometimes the author goes to the other extreme - 'do a piece of drama about 1066'. Having said that, he is very clear and down-to-earth, humorous at times, and this is the sort of book students could tackle without additional help, which would be an important step forward for students with literacy problems. Take a look, but borrow rather than buy.
