I saw this book in the library and was simply delighted to find and buy it. Covers all of his earlier work and how he progresses in process and theory, inspirations and influences. The images are brilliant and the book gives a real insight into how Hockney perceives himself and his work. An exciting buy. Highly recommended and a must for lovers of Hockney's work.

Refreshingly Honest 19 July 2011
By Duke of KC - Published on
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
What a good book for those who want a book about David Hockney and his paintings. It is refreshing to read an artist's honest account of his life and art. Although you may not find all his art likeable but to read such an honest confession of his professional as well as his personal life can't help but make you appreciate his genius and courage. The book is consider a catalogue raisonne of his early work which makes it even more valuable to the art historian. I would say he was the Warhol of the west coast scene but David Hockney was willing to go beyond just two dimensional work and expands to theater and stage design and settings much like Picasso did in his early years.

Good look at early David Hockney 28 Nov. 2013
By Judi L - Published on

I had checked this book out of the library many times, and decided I would like my own copy. Delivery was very fast, even via media mail. It's a great book from Hockney's early career. As with most older art books, many of the pictures are in black and white, but there are many in color, too. I would have given it five stars except this copy is a bit musty smelling.
