5.0 out of 5 stars Two loves tie together beautifuly 30 Nov. 2013

Wow! This is a book that combines two of my loves, the Bible and Lord of the Rings / The Hobbit. I home school three of my kids. They are ages ten, thirteen and fifteen. I've been using this book as a devotional for school and have read it out loud to them. We have had great discussions about personal character and the Bible. It's so wonderful to see our favorite character from a fictional series tie in beautifully with people in the Bible. It's a great book for making you think about your own personal spiritual journey.

5.0 out of 5 stars It rocks! 2 Dec. 2013

This book rocks. Every Tolkien fan understands that the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings have parallels that apply to our walk of faith. Jill Richardson draws the truth out of Tolkien’s Hobbit stories, helping readers understand and apply the principles. She starts out with a character, discussing the spiritual truths and then moves into a bible study, giving scriptural examples of how they apply. After each discussion, penetrating questions make the reader go a little deeper, moving into practical applications. My favorite chapter was “the Hero in spite of himself.” If you are a Tolkien fan--you gotta get this one!
4.0 out of 5 stars Fun, Insightful Devotional 19 Nov. 2014

If you are curious to know how Bard is like the Apostle Paul, or how Pippin is like the Apostle Peter, or Galadriel like Solomon – then I have the book for you.

"Hobbits, You, and the Spiritual World of Middle-Earth" is a devotional for teens written by Jill Richardson. Each chapter begins with a brief profile of one of Tolkien’s characters, including quotations from The Lord of the Rings, and then turns to a biblical personage (or, a handful of times, a biblical principle). Richardson draws parallels and lessons, and then leaves her young audience with discussion questions and words of practical application.

This devotional is written in down-to-earth language and often leavened with humor; I always enjoyed the ‘Vital Stats’ section of each chapter. The parallels between the Bible and The Lord of the Rings were interesting, and I found Beorn’s and Smaug’s particularly illuminating.

To her credit, Richardson goes beyond the standard biblical stories to the story of King Manasseh and to Ecclesiastes, one book of the Bible not often quoted to adolescents. I appreciated that there were several paragraphs of Scripture in each chapter, and not merely a handful of verses. Occasionally there were “author’s paraphrases” of Scripture, and I would have preferred if those had been actual quotations. It’s always better to let the Bible stand without abridgment, even when it is complex or difficult.

"Hobbits, You, and the Spiritual World of Middle-Earth" is a devotional, and naturally it doesn’t have the ‘meat’ of a theology book. But it is an insightful and easy read, successfully combining a fun look at Lord of the Rings with a profitable look at Scripture. Recommended for anyone, but especially any teen, who enjoys fantasy and is interested in the Bible.

I received a review copy of this book from the author.
4.0 out of 5 stars Great Devotional Book for Anyone Who Loves Fantasy 5 Nov. 2014

Hobbits, You, and the Spiritual World of Middle Earth is a devotional book for teens who love Tolkien's works, so it's written in a humorous, flip kind of way, to appeal to that audience. The author takes a look at the main characters from The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings and shows readers how they can learn Christian traits from each one. There's a lot of Scripture and questions in each chapter. The book can be used individually or as a group. I'm a fan of Tolkien, so I enjoyed the book, but even if you didn't read the books or see the movies, I think you can still get something out this devotional. And I think some good discussion can be had, especially if you know and love the characters.

Typical digital download. Nothing to say here but if refuses to let me type a succinct message so here I am wasting space.
