Adam Faith was unique. He was the only pre-Beatle UK pop singer who did not build his career solely upon copying American hits. From "What Do You Want" - the very hit single that catapulted Acton born Terence Nelhams to super stardom as Adam Faith, his contribution to buying British was invaluable. His singing style was utterly original even though some might claim that he, to some extent, tried to emulate the late Buddy Holly, in particular on the first hits.
He was a first rate live performer whose shows invariably received rave reviews.
Adam Faith had charisma, charm and a strong personality. He was intellegent, possessed a great sense of humour and had the gift of the gab, all of which made the public love him. He was a gifted actor which quickly brought him acclaim and fame on the silver screen in films such as "Beat Girl" and "Never Let Go!" His performance in the TV series "Budgie" was lauded by critics as was his portrayal of Frank Carver in "Love Hurts" in which he starred opposite Zoe Wanamaker. In the early 70s he ventured into management and production supplying Leo Sayer with his first big hits. He supervised the sessions for skiffle king Lonnie Donegan's come back album "Puttin' On The Style" which provided the latter with his first hit in 15 years.
"Hits!" is a superb portrayal of the man and his music and "hits!" is what this collection is all about! There aren't any fillers! "Hits!" starts with "What Do You Want?" (1959) and closes with his final UK chart contender, Bob Lind's "Cheryl's Goin' Home"(1966). Most of the hits on which Mr. Faith was accompanied by John Barry and His Orchestra are in true stereo. His post Barry, pre Roulettes hits are mostly in mono which I find a bit annoying as probably quite a few of these also were recorded in stereo.
This compilation is a must-have for any of the countless faithful Faith fans! For anyone who wants to be introduced to the many talents of the late singer, this collection comes highly commended.

I guess you could look upon 'Adam Faith's' rise to pop-stardom as a rags to riches
tale, earlier in 1959 he was labouring on a building site 'Terry Nelhams' by the end
of that year he topped the chart with 'What do you Want ? '(becoming 'Adam Faith' )
His follow-up also an original number 'Poor Me' which also topped the charts, in
fact his first seven releases were indeed Top 5 entries.
Though he only had the two number ones his chart career lasted for around six years,
with 18 top thirty entries in all 11 of which were top Ten chart-hits.....he had a very
easy and unique singing style which obviously proved popular.
Those of us that were listening to music back then would have been very aware of
'Adam's' music and chart successes, those of you that weren't probably have heard
your parents playing the songs from time to time.
'Adam Faith' of course took up acting, many will remember with fondness back in the
early 90's the popular series 'Love Hurts' in which he played opposite 'Zoe Wanamaker'
Everyone that followed or knew his music will have favourites from his recordings, i'll
just highlight a few of the tracks I remember with some fondness (other than those
earlier listed) .......'Someone Else's Baby'........'How About That'........'As You Like It'
'The First Time' (probably my favourite number he sung)..........'What Now' ......and,,,,,
'A Message to Martha' (Kentucky Bluebird) .........just a few of the 26 tracks on board
to remember and enjoy (Listening to the CD whilst writing the review)
As is the case with so many of the artists many of us followed back then 'Adam Faith'
sadly died following a heart-attack '8th March 2003' aged 62.
As I often say......The Music Lives On.

This compilation of 26 tracks, covering 10 years between 1958 and 1968 shows how Adam Faith matured from just being a pop star, albeit a good one, to a person who could handle the more serious ballads.

In the beginning we all remember "What Do You Want?", which I believe to be one of the shortest tracks to ever reach number one. This was followed by several tracks of the same genre, namely, "Poor Me" and "Someone Else`s Baby". Then we had a slight change of style with "When Johnny Comes Marching Home", before reverting back to the more familiar pattern with, "Made You" and "How About That", followed by a Christmas offering, "Lonely Pup".

"Who Am I?", "This Is It", "Easy Going Me", "Don`t You Know It", "The Time Has Come" and "Lonesome" followed, some not as big hits as before, as the change in pop music had started to take place. Adam, however was by this time was a better singer and with a wider audience. Next we have "Don`t That Beat All", "As You Like It", "Baby Take A Bow", "What Now?" and "Walkin` Tall", before he succumbed to the group era and had a backing group, the Roulettes, but the hits continued with "The First Time", "We Are In Love", "If He Tells You" and "I Love Being In love With You".

In my opinion, looking back, the next 4 tracks were some of his best, "A Message To Martha", originally written for Dionne Warwick as "A Message To Michael" by Bacharach/ David. "Stop Feeling Sorry For Youself", the heartfelt "Someone`s Taken Maria Away" and my favourite, "Cheryl`s Goin` Home".

It is sad that the better his records became the fewer he sold. He matured from a very good pop artist to a very good singer. The legacy he left will be with us for many more years to come, as a singer, an actor and a personality. Super value.
