Book Description

1 Jan 2007
One Thursday lunchtime Earth is unexpectedly demolished to make way for a new hyperspace bypass. For Arthur Dent, who has only just had his house demolished that morning, this is already more than he can cope with. Sadly, however, the weekend has only just begun. And the Galaxy is a very, very large and startling place indeed . . . The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy became a massive cult success when it was first published and continues to sell all over the world. It introduced such memorable characters as Arthur Dent, Marvin the Paranoid Android, Zaphod Beeblebrox and, of course, the Vogons, and remains one of the funniest, most irreverent and entertaining novels ever.

" 'Hey,' he said, 'what you do that for?'
Trillian was tapping her fingers on a screenful of figures.
'I've just thought of something stupid,' she said.
'Yeah? Worth interrupting a news bulletin about me for?'
'You hear enough about yourself as it is.'
'I'm very insecure. We know that.'
'Can we drop your ego for a moment? This is important.'
'If there's anything more important than my ego around, I want it caught and shot now.' Zaphod glared at her again, then laughed.
'Listen,' she said, 'we picked up those couple of guys...'
'What couple of guys?'
'The couple of guys we picked up.'
'Oh yeah,' said Zaphod, 'those couple of guys.'
'We picked them up in sector ZZ 9 Plural Z Alpha.'
'Yeah?' said Zaphod, and blinked.
Trillian said quietly, 'Does this mean anything to you?'
'Mmmm,' said Zaphod, ' ZZ 9 Plural Z Alpha. ZZ 9 Plural Z Alpha?'
'Well?' said Trillian.
'Er... What does Z mean?' said Zaphod.
'Which one?'
'Any one.'

One of the major difficulties Trillian experienced in her relationship with Zaphod was learning to distinguish between him pretending to be stupid just to get people off their guard, pretending to be stupid because he couldn't be bothered to think and wanted someone else to do it for him, pretending to be outrageously stupid to hide the fact that he didn't actually understand what was going on, and really being genuinely stupid. He was renowned for being amazingly clever and quite clearly so-but not all the time, which obviously worried him, hence the act. He preferred people to be puzzled rather than contemptuous. This above all appeared to Trillian to be genuinely stupid, but she could no longer be bothered to argue about it." --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for all bookshelves. 26 Aug 2007
By Kay
This is a review of the product, rather than the books themselves. This is all five of the "trilogy in five parts"; Douglas Adam's Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, Life, the Universe and Everything, So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish and Mostly Harmless. This is essential for any avid reader, and at this price (currently £4.50) it is an absolute steal.

5.0 out of 5 stars 42 10 Feb 2009
This is the five book trilogy that has never been surpassed. The first book ever to make me laugh out loud and in public - VERY embarrassing. But there is so much more to THHGTTG than words and reviews. It's a way of observing the world around us and our place within it; it's a running commentary on politics and religion and of mattrasses and biros.

Should you ever be planning to become marrooned on a desert island, a copy of THHGTTG (all 5 books mind) and a sturdy towel will not only keep your chin up for the duration but will likely see you trying to repeat the experience again next year.

Points out of 5? ... 42

There is a wisdom, a use of language and an attitude to humour and humanity that cannot be found anywhere but following that wonderful opening line, "Far out, at the unfashionable end of the western spiral arm of the galaxy, lies a small unregarded yellow sun."

The seller was great and my order was dispatched quickly. Anyway, enough about that. The books, well, what can I say. If you ever think you need cheering up or need a bloody good chuckle then this set of books is a realy must. From the outset the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy is incredible. Oh, and if you're after quotes for Facebook this is the perfect read! Just go buy it and enjoy.
